Landlord asking for too much personal info on application?
We are looking for a rental. We have tons of assets and the perspective landlord knows this. He gave us a credit application. We forwarded it to him and he then asked for our birthdates. This landloard is very young, aged 25, we feel he might be trying to scam us? I have never heard of anyone asking for

1. Birthdate,
2. Social security
3. Drivers license.

With this info, they could walk into my bank and clean me out, or become me?

you can buy a house with owner financing with less information. Private sellers have no way to check or report credit information

ScorpionSDGuy
I ask for birhtdates, SSN, DL#, Bank account numbers, Balances, Vehicle Registrations, Pets, 5 years of Rental History, Net worth, W-2's and paystubs.

All you have to do to protect youself is ask the landlord to prove that he actually owns the property. He will have much more to lose if he tries to scam you then you will. ie the property.

Turbo Baby
This is a normal request of a Landlord. They have rights and the need to protect their investment.

its the times we live in, but in general any landlord is going to require the first two items, some also the the third

This is normal info that landlords ask for. Some landlords ask for 4 weeks worth of paystubs to prove employment.

The landlord doesn't want deadbeats or carpetbaggers.

These are normal requests. Birthdate and SS# so he can run a credit check. Why SSN? You may share a common name and birthdate. He needs the SSN to identify you. Drivers License is for ID purposes. It tells who you are and if you are registered with the state.
No they cant walk into your bank or become you. Its harder than you think with all the safety devices the banks and other financial places have in place now. MOST id theft is from the internet and credit card places.
I actually ask for a lot more info also.

Samething with Banks, they ask for 2 Government ID to ensure you are who you are and SSN + Drivers License or any other combination. The Birth Date is excessive, but if you hand your license, then what difference?

And No he cannot clean you clear unless he ask for your Debit Card + Pin. The worst is he can use the info for identity theft, tops, worst case, opens a Credit Card in your name.

Plus as the others said, he has to protect himself from scammers, remember, he is not going to go anywhere, his building is glued to the ground, you are not and can move anywhere.

Trouble
That info is the norm and is needed to verify that you are who you claim to be.

You don't need to supply the info and the landlord does not need to consider renting to you without it. It's that easy.

As a landlord I've asked for a lot of things, but SS# is not one of them. I won't give my own out to anyone unless I absolutely need to

chezzrob
tell him to get lost and go through an agent.

Renters who have done wrong with an agent, have to rent through the private landlords who do it themselves. You do not need to get involved, use an agent, then you can get a reference and good rating if you do the right thing.,
