Kibbles | Landlord isn't doing much to fix things? |
I am renting a basement apartment. The first day we moved in we found out the shower wasn't working properly, so we told her and she said she'd have a plumber in the next day. no problem. eventually this 'next day' turned into 'three days' and by the time (by the 'plumber' aka her brother) it was fixed we had gone a week of showers by driving to my boyfriend's parent's house to use their shower.
anyways! now we have another problem. their dishwasher has plugged up or something, which has caused our roof to start flooding. the drywall is getting soaked through and she has claimed there will be a plumber to fix it today.
I don't want this to turn into another week-long affair, am I allowed to just call a plumber myself and hand her the bill? I live in Ontario. Additional Details Thanks for the advice so far! Goddamn, I just hate this woman. |

Move out, don't give your notice and trash the place. then when you find a new place go to smartcanucksdotca and ask for charity, those ppl are so dumb they will give you anything |

My sister has the same problem. But she went up to city hall to check the rules. Here, you can give a deadline for your repairs. If it doesn't get done, you can take care of the situation yourself and have your landlord take it out of your rent. Get up to your city hall and check it out. |

No, you cannot just call a plumber and send the bill to the landlord. Think about it this way: You cannot authorize repairs to someone else's property, nor can you make a promise on their behalf to pay a bill they never agreed to.
Your landlord is obligated to fix this in a timely manner, but that does not mean you can take matters into your own hands. If your landlord does not uphold their legal obligation, then you have the right to take the matter to court. If you can prove that your landlord broke the lease by not maintaining a livable space, then you will be let off of your end of the lease. |

Your lease is the key.
If you call a real plumber and hand her the bill, she will argue with you, and you will end up eating some or all of the cost.
See if your lease has a "habitability" clause. If it does, read it. There is the possibility you can claim the basement is uninhabitable, and break the lease.
In any case, you need to find another place to live.
