Landlord issue? Heat issue?
When I moved into my apartment, I was told that we had no air conditioning and I wasn't allowed to have a window unit because the building couldnt handle the voltage. But my landlord told me it "shouldn't be an issue because it stays cool on the top floor." It is an issue. My roommate had a heat stroke last week, although we have about 8 fans blowing simultaneously in our direction. I looked at the thermometer and it was 102 degrees in the apartment. I spent about 90% of my time in a cold shower, or in a bikini spraying myself with water. Is there anything we can do about this, or are we forced to be miserable all summer?

Kim, I would love to move. The problem is, renters sign a paper that forces them to pay rent for a number of months. It's called a lease. But thanks for not answering the question.

I don't what you were thinking. Heat rises. The top floor is going to be hottest in the whole building.

Of course the landlord is going to say anything to get you to move in.

Since you're in a lease there really isn't a whole lot you can do until the lease ends and you can move.

Until then:
Cover the windows with thick white curtains/sheets/table cloths. This serves 2 purposes: reflect heat away from the windows, and prevent sun/heat from entering the apartment where it'll just make the inside hotter.

Try to set up the fans so you can get some cross ventilation - suck air in one window, blow it out the window on the other side.

Try an evaporative cooler. This isn't an air conditioner - it's basically a fan that blows air over a bunch of ice cubes (you'll need to provide the ice cubes, or buy a bag from the store)

Find some place cooler to sleep. A friend of mine would go onto Hotels.com and look for cheap hotel rooms with air conditioning when things got too hot for her in her place. She could usually get something nice for $30-40/night, which was fine for the week or so it would get really hot in our area, but obviously won't work that well if you're looking at several weeks or months.

Soak a t-shirt in cold water, wring it out mostly, roll it up, and drape it around your neck/shoulders like a scarf. Friends of mine who ride motorcycles cross-country use this to help keep cool under their heavy leather riding suits.

How many months are left on your lease? If it's not that many, you may want to move now, and just pay double rent for a few months. Yeah, that sucks, but it's better than breaking your lease which will cost you even more money, or sleeping in an oven for the summer, which could make you sick.

Sarah, You can buy a portable A/C at Home Depot. No need to use a window, although I personally do not think the voltage thing makes a whole lot of sense. I am not an electrician, but I do not think they use an unusual voltage.

DennistheMenace
he told you, you couldnt have a/c....but did he put it in the lease? heat rises....and the building not handling the voltage, is another line of crap....and do you pay your own electric too....then each unit is seperate, yet equal, and can handle a window unit......
you might have a shot of breakin the lease, w/ all these lies...espically if hes not payin the electric....that hot would be uninhabitable, and hes allowing no way out for relief.....................

Sarah; start looking 4 a different apt. If the landlord tries to hold u 2 the lease have your pictures and a video if u can make one of the conditions in the apt. True there is a inhabitable condition that is in existence in most states. Good Luck.

Maybe you should consider moving.

I'd say that since you knew there wasn't AC and you couldn't put one in and you moved in anyway you're stuck.

You'll have little chance convincing a small claims judge that the landlord misled you, so it's doubtful you'll be able to get out of your lease. I've never heard of a top floor magically staying cool. Doesn't heat rise and the roof absorb the sun's heat?

We also have top-floor rentals without AC and we do not allow window ACs. However, we do allow and even provide portable room air conditioners. If you have eight fans running, then your unit will probably be able to handle the electrical load of portable room air conditioners.

Ask the landlord to visit the apartment in the afternoon. You're probably not the first tenant who has complained and the landlord will probably be unwilling to let you out of lease since s/he will be unable to re-rent the unit during the summer. Ask if the landlord will be willing to split the costs of portable ACs with you.

Obviously, provide your move-out notice at the earliest opportunity and get the heck out of there.

You will have to move. You can say the heat renders the apartment uninhabitable and that the landlord misrepresented the conditions in the apartment. There is such a concept as warranty of habitability. The same thing applies if there wwere no heat in the winter.

Prof. Dave
Heat rises, your landlord was lying to you. It is always warmer in upper rooms than in lower rooms due to heat rising. I would call and talk to him about it then if he can not help you I would move. You should not have to live with no air in hot weather. I have known people who have done it, but they had a yard and would spend all day outside under a tree. Fact is, it would be cooler outside than inside your apartment. You shouldn't have to live like that, though the idea of you all walking around in bikinis is kinda nice. =), sorry I know I'm a pig. Try talking to that fool again and if nothing can be done try to get out of there and find another place. Good luck.

estielmo
I find it difficult to believe that with all your windows open and window fans sucking an airflow from one side of the apartment to the other that is gets to 102 degrees. You don't circulate internal heated air, you pull fresh air in.

If you live in a climate that can even approach that temperature in June I don't know why you would rent there.

One thing to note is that the most modern a/c units do not pull the power the way old ones do.
