I went through this on a money order twice, I swore I wouldn't use the system again, it gets to complicated but.
Go to the business you got the money order from, you have to fill out a tracer, it takes about a month, then they'll trace the money order to see if it's been cashed, if not they will give you a certain amount of time, then issue you another. All this is going to cost you about $25.00
Tell the manager since it's his fault, he can wait and defer that month until you get confirmation. then, for now on pay in cash or check, ATM card or debit card. |

Whoever issued the money order should have a record of it. Maybe they can help. |

Go back to the bank where you got the money order they should have some paper trail of that money order. |

Go back to where you bought it and get it reissued. It may take you half the day to get them to figure out where their copy of the receipt is but it will be worth it. With any luck you bought it through your bank account. If so then you can get it cancelled and reissued quite easily. You may have to absorb the service charges, unfortunately. |

u need to go to the person who verbally admitted to losing your rent payment, let them know you need it in writing. u take tha written document to get notorized for a small fee. in case they want to charge you again tha notorized document will hold up in any case, because it clearly states it was there mistake |

The loss is the landlord's problem.
He admits that he had the money order, so he's not claiming that he never received payment. Therefore, you are not required to give him more money as a replacement.
Though the lost payment is not your fault, you nonetheless should be as helpful as possible to maintain a good relationship with your landlord. Tell him that you no longer have the receipt, but give him the information about what brand it was and where you purchased it from. The location will have a record of all money orders and their amounts, so they can pinpoint it. It will help immensely if you can recall the exact date you purchased it.
And from now on, get yourself a file folder, label it "Rent Receipts," and always put receipts for money orders and cashiers checks in it. Or at the very least, make it a practice to hold on to these kinds of receipts for at least a couple of months. |

if this is not the first time they lost your paper work...why are you still throwing away your records of the deal? Should always keep your receipts for at least a year after the deal has been completed.....if you can remember the time and date you got the money order then go to the place you purchased it...and next time keep all your receipts for a period of one year after the fact...live and learn... |

I don't know if you can trace the money order. But I do know that, since you gave the manger the money order you cant be held responsible for the apartments mistakes.
If they try to harass you in any way just talk to a lawyer to see what they can do for you. Sometimes you just have to cut ur losses when it comes down to other peoples mistakes! |

Did they admit to having possession of the money order and losing it OR are they saying that they just can't find it? These are two different things. If the office manager admits to losing the money order, then it's on them, and you should ask them to credit the rent for you since a money order is almost like lost cash unless you can get it cancelled and reissued. You're out of the money.
If they aren't admitting that they had it and lost it, you're probably going to have to pay it again unless you can get the money order cancelled by whomever issued it and and reissued.
Always get a receipt from your landlord if you're using something other than a personal check. |

That's a horrible problem! you don't have actual proof and they don't have the $$. The fact that they admit to losing it could be in your favor. Hindsight vision is 20/20....if they have lost stuff in the past I would demand a receipt whenever I paid them from now on. I'd try to get something in writing from them stating that they knew you paid it and they lost it. If they lost it...it's their loss. If they switch their story and tell you to prove that you paid, you'll have to ask where you got the Money Order for help. Be careful and good luck! You may have to remind them that you have always paid your rent. |

It would be there responsibility. However, you might be able to go to the place where you bought your money order and find out what the polices are. There must be something in place to deal with lost money orders. Never ever trash a receipt of any money transition on such large scale. At the end your apartment manager could simply claim you never paid them and try to collect. |

I'm sorry, the receipt would have helped tremendously. Other than that it is like cash. |

If they admit to loosing it then they should have to pay for it or just let it go since their is no other way for you to get that money back. But try to get it in writing about them loosing the money order so if they try to say you never payed you can have a paper saying they lost it. |

first off you should never throw away a money order receipt. It has information on how to claim your money back if it gets lost, or never gets cashed. Without the number you are hopeless to get your money back unless somehow you can get the information from the place you purchased it but not very likely. Ever notice how the next day after you throw something away you need it. This is what i would do. I would get a hidden microphone and a camera if available and get them to admit on tape that they lost the money order. That way you can take them to small claims court and have evidence if they refuse to take the fall. You know if they dont accept that as rent and you go to court that they will never admit to being at fault. Thats the only way i can see of protecting yourself at this point. In the future never throw out those money order receipts. |

Yep - you've got a problem. The whole idea of going to the trouble of getting a Money Order was so you would have a receipt.
And given the landlord's habit of losing stuff -seems like you would want to really hold on to that receipt. (next time)
Depending on where you bought it, they might be able to help you recover the receipt number - wouldn't hurt to ask. |

It's their lost not yours they can't blame or punish you because they are not organized. It's their fault not yours plus it's their problem let them deal with it but to be on the safe side I would try to find the money order receipt if you still have it. |
