Landlord problem, can anyone help?
here's my situation. about a week and a half ago, i came home from work and noticed that one of the shades on my bedroom window was open. i always keep it closed for a reason. i let it slide thinking maybe they were working on something.

however, last friday i came home and noticed that someone was going through my DVDs and VCR tapes. my entertainment stand has a tape storage with doors and whoever was going through my tapes left the door wide open. that's how i know someone was in my suite.

the reason i think it was my landlord or his maintenence dept is i never duplicated a key and i always make sure i lock my doors.

what would you do?

file a police report, then call your landlord and let them know what happened ( someone obvisiouly broke in but had a key) and that if it happens again you will be requesting an investigation

Marnie_Australia
It could be a previous tenant. Ask the real estate if anyone else has copies of your house keys and report the incident with them in the first instance.

There are cheap surveillance cameras that can be concealed and set up. Call your local police and ask what your options are. If you can catch them in the act, they go to jail.
There may be rules regarding recordings so check with the local police.

CALL THEM ASAP AND LET THEM KNOW IN THE OFFICE OR MANAGEMENT WHATS GOING ON...SET UP A VIDEO CAMERA IF POSSIBLE...OR SET THEM UP SOMEHOW LIKE STAY HOME AND BUST THEM. TAKE PICTURES AND CALL AN ATTORNEY...YOU CAN SUE THEIR BUTTS OFF FOR THIS....UNDER NOOOO CIRCUMSTANCES IS THIS ALLOWED AT ALL. YOU CAN GET FREE CONSULTATIONS WITH ATTORNEYS AND SEE WHERE YOU STAND BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE PROOF....IF THIS ISNT SOMETHING YOUR INTERESTED IN, CHANGE THE LOCKS OR MOVE OUT. THAT DOESNT SEEM SAFE AT ALL. GOOD LUCK

Many landlords reserve the right to enter your apartment, with a pass key and a valid reason. It is normal that they have access to fumigate while you are not home, to fix or maintain plumbing in case of a leak or God forbid an electrical fire.

If this is the case, they will respond to your direct question: Who was in my place and why are they going through my belongings?

If they claim they don't have a key and never entered your place, ask them to call the police so you can register a complaint with them and have the place dusted for fingerprints.

Tell them you are concerned about security and ask if they will install an alarm system for you or at least pay to have the lock changed.

If they say no, make sure you mention to them that you will install your own alarm if they don't. You can buy an alarm sticker instead, and/or set up a motion capture webcam.

That will make them think twice, unless it is another tenent sneaking in!

Get a camera. They are cheap enough and then you can catch and nail whoever is doing that.

Buy a surveilance camera that's connected to a motion detector. Once you have concrete PROOF, take your landlord to court.
