Soulful eyes
Landlord worries?
I rent my flat through a letting agency, and asked to extend my lease another year. They agreed, and The lease was sent to me last week. Whilst signing my part of the lease, I noticed that my land lords name was on my lease ( I never knew it before as it was all carried out by my letting agency).
When I read his name I realised that some mail had been coming through the door for him, and I had been sending in back to the Mail company saying 'Not at this Address'. A few days ago, a man arrives at my door, saying they are taking my landlord to court for £200 in uinpaid bills. I stated that he did not live at my address. (where the bills had been sent) and that i had been putting them back in the mail box, as I didnt know who he was up untill last week, and the company asked ME to pass on the court notice!!
I have sent the notice to my Letting Agency, with a letter that is kind of what i've written here.
My worry is, is this my fault? Can I be blamed for him getting into trouble?

Ah!
The problem should be with the debt collectors, they should not have disclosed any information to you regarding your landlords debts, nor should they have asked you to pass on a court order.

I would get in touch with your local CAB. Take your lease with you too.

Good luck.

No nothing to do with you. Please don't worry. Refer them to the letting agents.

You sound like you have done everything I would have in those circumstances. It is up to your landlord to notify people of his change of address. I would not stress over it. His fault not yours.

No because you didnt kow it was his name.
Its his fault for not changing his address with his debtors!
At the end of the day he knows who he owes money to and will know that he hasnt received his bills....unless he is stupid!

No, he shouldn't be sending mail to a place he doesn't live in

byebye
no,he doesn't live at your address,he should have his mail delivered to his home, dont worry yourself

gillyrilly
It does not seem like it should be. You were not aware of his name. I'm in USA but here you would be fine.

anon1985
No, something similar happened to me last year. It is his responsibility to change his billing address as he has moved. as you are renting through a Lettting Agency you would not been been privy to your landlords details so you wouldn't have been able to forward it on.

As far as you knew the letter were for a previous tenant and not your landlord.

No he should be fully aware of any mail that is not delivered to his address, this is his problem not yours as he is the one who didnt pay the bill

Not your fault, or your problem, at all. Your landlord probably lived in the property at some time, and then decided to move on and let it out. It is his responsibility to notify all concerned of his new address. You have done your bit by passing the correspondence on to the letting agent and now it's up to him to sort his own problems out. Dont worry about it - he will have known about his debt - let him pay it.
