Hi, just a question out of curiosity really, what's the most ridiculous demand or request you've heard from someone who was renting? In my last place 2 housemates demanded new mattresses because they didn't like the thought of sleeping on a mattress other ppl had used, and one wanted to ask the landlord to install double glazing ('but it'll only take a day to put it in') until I told her that was never gonna happen! In my current place a housemate thought that the landlord should do something to stop any mould forming in the bathroom and that the walls needed to be torn down because they felt cold which in her mind equalled damp. And a friend of mine wanted her landlord to stop rats which ran along the public street in front of the house at night and my dad once had a tenant whose carpet was replaced after a minor leak, then her parents rang him up demanding some kind of survey incase the floor fell through! |

I had a resident who heard a knock at the building main security door. She opened it to a stranger who happened to be a naked man. She called me and insisted I check it out. I called PD for nuisance. She called back an hour later and told me she went all over to find him and took a picture for proof. When she came into my office with the picture it was just the mans lower half. She asked me and the officer to identify and get rid of him. Really, I don't know all the men in town well enough. |

VJ-city codes in our area DO say that any combustable material (grills of any kind, scooters, motor bikes) may not be kept with in 10 feet of a structure. It is a fire hazard.
But at this point I have had every dumb issue under the sun-people living in a place illegally, parking issues you name it. The best was this week-new tenant came it to say the dry in the unit didn't work even after running 4-5 cylces clothes were wet. So our guy went to look-it was set on the fluff cycle. They tried it once on Medium but that felt hot so they cut it back. They also stopped the dryer every ten minutes to empty the lint filter so as to prevent fires. Gotta say the whole office got a good laugh over that. |

A landlord expected me to pay the cost of fixing a clogged toilet since the clog had been caused by "a foreign object" that had been flushed. A phone call to the plumber revealed that the "foreign object" was a child's toothbrush with the name of PREVIOUS tenant's child on it. Another attempted hold me personally responsible for damages to the lawn and shrubberies done by a municiple paving crew. |

I have been a landlord and a tenant so can usually see both sides.
Craziest landlord decided he wanted us to move out after 2 weeks, said because of environmental health dept, real reason he had buyer for property. We had moved around Spain 8 times so we refused. Landlord then removed cooker and cutlery from kitchen, and threatened to remove stairs, so we would not be able to use toilets or bathroom.
Result court injunction on Landlord to return things taken and ban on Landlord to not come within 1 mile of his own house. |

Well, when I was in my 2nd year of Uni we had a house share with 4 of us. We each had separate contracts and paid individual rents. One of my mates dropped out at the last minute and the landlord tried to persuade us that we were obliged to split his rent between us for the whole year! If we'd all been splitting the total rent between us, we would have had to do this, but as we had individual tenancy agreements, she had no right to ask us to do this! Damn cheek!
Slightly different, but a seller of a flat my boyfriend and I made an offer on wanted a £10k deposit upfront with no paperwork! Very cheeky!
On the other side of the coin, I've had plenty of bad landlords who refused our logical demands. For example, when I was in that student house mentioned above, the fridge door was broken which caused all our food to go off - she wouldn't fix it so we had to prop it up with a tin of vaseline lip therapy!
There was also fungus (literally, large mushrooms) growing in the bathroom which was a health hazard and very bad for my best friend who has asthma. She did nothing about this either!
And then there was the electricity that turned itself off at random points of the day and night and couldn't get turned back on for hours.... the landlady merely said "Oh, that's because the fusebox has damp around it".... HELLO?!!....
Landlords and tenants can both be a nightmare! Thank God I don't rent any more ;-)
