Scott | Lie on apartment lease....I need an answer please? |
I am having a hard time finding an apartment to rent. My credit is good and I have proved that I can pay but they say that since I am a full time student they are not allowed to rent to me. I am a 32 year old who has been recently divorced and went back to school to better my career. I make decent money....have owned a home for over 6 years and never once missed a mortgage payment. Should I lie on my next application and say that I am not a full time student. Can they find out? Additional Details There is a form that I have/had filled out that says...if I sign this I am saying that I am not a full time student. I have questioned many on this...they said that they don't want to run a frat house and college student's have a bad rental history so they just forego renting to any student's. I understand where they are coming from...but more and more responsible adults are returning to school that do not fall under the "party" category. Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it!! I should not have to settle living in a dump becuase I am a student. It is the real nice places that have this "rule"! |

I agree -- lie. That information is completely irrelevant for a 32yo with verifiable income.
Although I am a bit of stickler for the rules, I draw the line at stupid stuff. The truth is that this is nothing like a job application -- if you deliver what you are promising in your question, it will never be an issue.
(However, don't be a dumb@ss...don't discuss your situation or "the lie" with anyone in your new apartment complex or with anyone who might know someone there...not for a long, long time) |

NEVER lie on an application. If a landlord finds out you lied you will be automatically denied.
I do not see how being a student has any bering on getting a rental or not. If you have enough income to qualify then I do not see the problem. |

Where did it ask that? Or did you write in "fulltime student" for "occupation?"
Don't do that. Being a fulltime student and living off graduate student loans is not an occupation. |

You say you "make decent money", so you must have some sort of job. When the application asks what you do, just put down information about your employment, not your school. |

Why would you have to disclose that information? Absolutely lie. |
