I note you keep harping on about this. Your parents are not responsible for your adulthood. Get a job, get a mortgage or a rental property and look after yourself. You wont have to work 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Make your own fun. |

of course life sucks, the idea of it is to raise above it and create something for yourself.
no fun in having it easy.
if you want out, then dont have a family, say yes to every opportunity and go with the flow to see where it goes.
dont assume what tomorrow holds then it will be a suprise and more fun each day you get up as you wont know what the day will hold for you. |

I disagree - it's worse if you waste your money on renting, in my opinion.
Let's take Birmingham (UK) City Centre for example. One property I have seen would cost me £1,000 a month in mortgage payments. The same apartment is also up for rent - at £750 per month. It's cheaper in the short term, but you'll be paying that rent for the rest of your life.
The average mortgage is 25 years - not 30+. Most people are settled in their jobs by their mid 20s to early 30s, which means that they could potentially be mortgage free by the time they are about 50 years old.
The sensible ones are the ones who save if they are able to. I understand that not everybody is able to, but most people CAN - they just DON'T. My boyfriend wasn't given any handouts; he saved up since he left Uni at 22, got a mortgage at 27 and he'll be mortgage free in 16 years. If I'm still with him in 16 years' time, I'll only be 38 - definitely not too old to enjoy mortage free living. And I plan to save money every month now that I've left Uni. Nothing falls into your lap in life - you have to work hard and save hard. That's how you get what you want.
50 years old is much younger than it used to be. People aren't considered 'old' anymore until 70-80, and even then a lot of people still have a hell of a lot of life in them. My Grandma is 73, still works, goes to the gym, has no grey hair and I know that if she was mortgage free now she'd certainly be able to enjoy it! What you are saying is rather agist - you are making out that the only time to enjoy money and life is when you're young. Also, even if you are mortgage free for one year then die, you'll have a large inheritance to leave to your family or to anybody you wish.
Secondly, not everybody chooses to have children. And naturally most of the ones that do have moved in with somebody by that point, so there is more income coming in to the family. Having kids doesn't mean that you can't afford to have a mortgage.
People are being more sensible and getting onto the property ladder as early as they can. I know a guy who is only 22, he's been putting money aside since he was 18 for a deposit and he has just got a mortgage. He'll have paid it off by the time he's in his late 40s - early 50s. He'll be the one who can retire early, take a cruise around the world, leave his family a something substantial to help when he is gone and gets to relax whilst everybody else who thought a mortgage was a waste of time and money will be slaving away until retirement age and struggling after that.
It is also being made easier for people to get on the ladder with the introduction of shared mortgages. One can get a property of let's say £200k for only £100k, then once the've paid off that, they have the option to buy out the other half if they wish to. More and more people are also getting joint mortgages with friends instead of renting, so that they can get themselves on the ladder.
Sorry matey, but I think mortgages are the way to go and one does not need Mommy and Daddy to buy a flat for them in order to get on the ladder. |
