Lying landlord?
Ok i moved into a rental home in april when i was about to sign the lease i had asked if the house (built in 1910) had been tested for lead paint and if there was any around. well my land lord said now. now that there is paint chips in the window sill upstairs in my FIVE MONTH OLD DAUGHTERS ROOM ive decided to get a home test. yeah lead paint. i dont know what to do? my daughter isnt crawling yet or anything and certainly wont be near the windows but lead is deadly and i dont want anything happening to her.

is there anything i can do right now though to protect her. its most harmful if ingested right? so always washing her hands and things like that will help? im calling my lawyer tommrow.

Isn't it a federal law that lead paint must be disclosed? It sure is.

http://www.illinois-attorney.com/lp3.htm

Check out the lead paint law. Your landlord might not just be a liar, he might be a felon!

You have to protect your daughter. The lead paint makes the house uninhabitable, and that is the argument you will use to break your lease. (As in, "Mr. Landlord, if you do not let me out of this lease without penalty, I will report you and your lead-based paint to the authorities. Federal penalty is $10,000.")

Classy Granny
Any home built that long ago will have lead based paint. You should have been given a lead paint disclouser when you moved in. The problem is when there are chips. If it's painted over there is no problem. Your landlord needs to clean up the chips and paint.

Is it written in the renters agreement that he had the house tested for lead paint?

The safest thing to do would be move, although it might be costly, it might be the best thing for your child?

You need to consult an attorney for your options. I'm sure you'll have some recourse since he verbally told you no. Also if there is a landlord-tennant association in your county your should contact them and file a complaint against him. good luck to you.

Confront him about this problem. It's not safe or healthy. If he refuses to fix the problem, or let you out of your lease...contact the attorney general in your state...possibly an attorney as well

i really think you should register this matter to the local police or take it to the court.....you being a woman will have the benefit of doubt.....and this is a child matter....so it will have to be taken seriously.....it can really harm your child....and if in case nothing happens...then i suggest you change your apartment asap......cuz this can be really damage the child's growth in some way or the other....all the best :)

the landlord will have to pay for abatement. I would talk to a lawyer and see if you can get one months rent from them and your security deposit back so you can move too.

of course he was lying

you can tell him either let me out of the lease or you will get a lawyer. there are lawyers that can just get you out of the lease if that is all you want to do.. and they can probably get you a little bit of money also, at least enough to cover the fee for the lawyer unless you really feel the need to sue..
