kim_mii | MICE, MICE and BIG Rats on the street at night....? |
I just moved into my first apartment at 28 y.o in May. I fell in love with the brownstone because it was newly renovated with beatiful floors and excellent fixtures. My rent is 1100 and I have to pay for heat and gas. The problem is there are Mice. Mice everywhere. A neighbor called it a radical infestation. I am terrified of them. I sleep at my moms house 3-4 days out of the week because of them. I saw one come out of the closet and left my house at 3AM. Should I break my lease, put my stuff in storage, move back home and save money for 6-8 months so I can put money down on a brownstone? I feel like I'm going backwards. |

Have you told your landlord?
Have you called the health dept. or the housing inspector? |

Call the health department, the landlord is responible for getting rid of them.. Talk to your landlord first and id he refuses to deal with the problem, then call someone from the city and the health department.. That is to much rent to pay every month if you cant even stay at your own apartment.. |

Try mint -- I had a problem with field mice in my basement- I planted different varieties of mint by all the basement windows after we sealed up the foundation and redid all the walls, floors and ceilings. I know this might be difficult to do on the sides (I know brownstones are basically connected on the sides to other brownstones) If you have front and backyard access to the basement -- plant some mint by the accesses after you de-rat the premises--
Also -- speak to your landlord -- rodent infestation degrades property values and it is in the landlords best interest to call an exterminator. Depending on your lease -- you might have to call an exterminator and take the bill off your rent. You should check it out.
I have listed a web page to explain the procedure taken in Idaho to clean up rodent infestation. After clean up is complete you can use mint plants and oil to keep the rodents away.
For the interior of an apartment you can spray the woodwork (especially the baseboard, door jams and floor boards) with mint essential oil and carrier oil (the wood will absorb the oil and the rodents don't like it at all) |

There are definite ways to rodent proof your apartment. However, you are going to need some help. The rodents always have an entrance and an exit to visit your apartment. Usually these are located behind the stove and wherever pipes enter the apartment. These entry doors must be found and closed off. Place poison inside the openings before sealing them off and use coarse steel wool as well to discourage re-entry. They will move on to the neighbors place before struggling to get into your home. Keep all food in tightly covered containers. I'm positive that the buildings in the area are all infested and the rodent population is one that will eventually have to be addressed by the city health department. Unfortunately the track record for city agencies to administer cures for such maladies is far from satisfactory. It's really up to you and your neighbors and all the cats (which can be another problem) |
