MY NEW APT. HAS BEDBUGS-- should my leasing co. buy me a new mattress?
I finally figured out I don't have skin parasites or a new allergy. My new apartment has bedbugs. I am relieved but apprehensive. I heard they can live in your mattress for almost a year without food. I don't want that! I think my leasing company should definitely pay for an exterminator, right? Should they reimburse me for a new mattress set? That sh*t's expensive!!!
Additional Details
I moved in the day after Thanksgiving. I don't think the infestation is very bad, but I definitely do not like it. I am very unhappy.

The land;ord probably should exterminate... most cities have laws concerning insect infestation, and particularly highlight bed bugs. Unless you can prove that the infestation existed before you moved in, the landlord is NOT responsible for your personal belongings. It is possible that you picked them up from the moving truck, that a guest of yours brought them, that you brought them in... etc etc etc.

If you can't replace the mattress or have had it treated, purchase mattress covers- the thick plastic kind that zip up. check all of your furniture- seams in the bed frame itself, if it is wood and there are any chips near the foot of the leg- check it, bed bugs hide in tiny tiny places.

Vacuum often and seal the vacuum bag- or the bag you dump the vacuumed stuff into- then place it in a second bag and seal it. reduce clutter. Dont bother with the expensive store bought extermination products- it's pretty bogus, an exterminator has the right solutions.

Really, vacuuming and keeping an eye out (squashing the bugs you do find) washing all of your clothes and linens (put them all in garbage bags so the bugs or eggs don't fall out of them into your hallway or car) those are the best way to get rid of bed bugs.

Are you sure you did not get them from some other furniture you brought in the house?
There's no way to prove you got them from the apartment.

my lease says all exterminations and bug/rodent related problems are my problem and thats on me to get it handled..... if it doesnt say that in your lease its def worth askin the land lord

No.....

Your bed bugs were ALREADY IN YOUR BED......

BED BUGS Do NOT COME FROM Out OF The Blue, they come from within.

So, NO, your apt. bldg does owe you a new bed.....

You need to buy yourself a new bed.... & only you.

my friend had bedbugs... ehh if you get a new mattress leave the plastic on until they are gone

I would even go so far as to look for a new place. Report what is going and be open to their suggestions, otherwise, it could be a small claims court issue.

Replacing the mattress after fumigation does sound like a great idea. But there is a problem. You are not likely to get a perfect fumigation. The bedbugs are likely to be back soon, because the fumigation does not get the eggs left around the cracks in the apartment. The eggs in the mattress will keep the population going.

Bedbugs have a specially difficult control, their eggs can go for half a year and more without hatching if the space is cool.
In summer one can get a fairly uniform fumigation if it is repeated 3 times a week apart. That includes the mattress, if it is left in the apartment, but mattresses tend to keep the fumigant after fumigation. Not nice.

Problem is that you will leave the apartment with clothing during the fumigation, you will carry away some insects and eggs with you, and bring them back after fumigation. You will repeat that each time, and each time you will recontaminate the apartment.

Fumigating a single apartment leaves insects and eggs outside the walls of the apartment, over in the next apartment, the halls, the floors and walls. They filter back in.

This species is not easily controlled without lasting residual insecticides. When one has lasting residual insecticides all round the apartment, regularly, even daily laundering the sheets in hot water is able to reduce the number of bugs that are ready to eat you. This is not a matter of bad hygiene but a matter of cooking bugs and eggs where they are most likely to set up camp.

I think it would be a matter of how long you've had the mattress. Bed buds usually live in your mattress. As long as you wash your sheets, bedding, pillows, etc. on a normal basis (at least once a month) you shouldn't get bed bugs. They live in your mattress and eat your dead skin. Unless an exterminator tells you differently and your bed is brand new I don't know how it could be the leasing companies fault.

boobugg
how long have you lived in your apt. I dont think they will pay for your mattress but they are responsible to hire a exterminator. they maybe able to clean your mattress.

You need to tell your landlord so they can notify the other tenants and hopefully exterminate them. But as for them buying you a mattress, not going to happen. for all they know you are the reason their building now has bedbugs.

Absolutley, they not only need to rid the bugs at their expense, they need to buy you a new bed.
