anon | Money off rent..............? |
would it be fair to ask for money off rent cos we had mice in our rented house, we've lived here a year and a half and seen them recently
my friend said we could get a reduction on our rent because of the mice.
is that fair? or would the landlord laugh and say no way? |
|

First, have you even advised the landlord that there are mice in the house? Second, have you tried to eleviate the problem with a few packets of mouse poision placed strategically and SAFELY with pets or kids around? Third, how much do you want off of the rent? and Fourth have you advised the LL about the mice yet? |

would guess and say no.
rats and mice often occur because of the persons living their leaving food around ect.
rodents are such a common prob i doubt u will get anything back |

Well if the property could be deemed as uninhabitable for the period in which you had mice, you could legitimately argue for a full refund of rent for that period.
If the infestation, however, wasn't severe enough to put your health or well-being in danger, you probably couldn't ask for any rebate, unless your landlord failed to take action in a timely fashion after you advised him of the problem.
Even if it were only a small infestation, If he failed to act after you let him know about the mice, I reckon you should be given a modest gesture of goodwill. |

You should definately inform your landlord about the issue. I am not sure you could get any money back though.
Try charging the mice for a bit of the rent ;) |

Chances are that your landlord will say no although it never hurts to ask. As you have been there so long he may even try and say it is your fault that his house is infested with mice. |

Ha Ha!! Laugh and say No Way. Not his fault.
You've been there a year and a half, and if you just now have them, it's either seasonal or your housekeeping. You could ask for LL to provide you some traps, but they're really cheap. Common for mice to enter at this time of year. Keep the place clean and put down a few traps and you should solve the problem.
You could ask LL to supply the traps, but they're really cheap. I just did for a tenant who was too cheap to pay $.99 for a pack of 4 on her own. |

I think it unlikely. Worth a try though! |

As a tenant, it is important to know your rights, but also your responsibilities...inform your landlord |

never hurts to ask. it is a health issue too. check your rental agreement also. If he is not a slum lord he may get to the problem right a way. |

am in a similar situation myself tho not mice, but a few other problems, what we propose to do is tell the landlord to sort it out, and while he sorts it, ask him politely to drop the rent in the mean time....maybe you could propose a similar thing, you will be surprised how quickly it gets sorted.....or at least thats what i am hoping....good luck |

no i would say the landlord wouldnt let you reduce the rent, but he may arrange a pest control officer to come out for free!
Mice and rats are evrywere but we dont see them very much!
I live rurally and if i said that to my landlord he would laugh in my face, incidently i have seen a rat recently that was like 12 inches + long, bu io know its not because of waste or food or anything, its because theres water near by and they arnt infesting the place!
The environmental health will come out for nothing and you landlord will know this so dont make a fool out of yourself and embarrass by asking!! |

I live in a rented house with damp and mould constantly growing on a bedroom wall which my landlord insists is condensation ...I asked for a reduction in rent as it was costing me twice as much to try and keep the room warm and was told that there are plenty homeless people out there who would be willing to put up with a bit of dampness...I dont really fancy your chances |

You're not entitled to money of rent, legally, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. The mice aren't the landlor'ds problem, they're your problem, especially if you've just seen them recently after a year and a half. I doubt the landlord would do anything for you but if you're polite about it, who knows? |
|

It never hurts to ask! You can assume that the mice ate some of your food, which you could be compensated for. You might feel awkward asking but again, you never know what someone will say until you ask, and even then, getting a "no" isn't the end of the world - at least you tried! |

Okay, you say the landlord might laugh and say no. That's not so bad, talk to him, there is a chance he might say yes. |
