Moving home - get packers in or pack ourselves?
My boyfriend and I are moving into a new flat in one week. I would rather pack ourselves because it saves money, means we can have things exactly where we want them and will make moving day a bit less stressful (we already have a 4 hour drive to our new place to contend with!). My boyfriend would rather pay the movers to pack, because it saves us having to do it and they will have the right kind of boxes to hand, whereas we might buy the wrong kind or not enough.

What would you do? :-)
Additional Details
Just to clarify, we will be using removal men to actually shift the stuff, either way :-)

Pay for a homepack service. They do everything from start to finish and may even take furniture apart and reassemble it at the other end in exactly the room you want it in. All the boxes are labelled and put into rooms and they do all the fetching and carrying.

Worth EVERY penny and is WAY less stressful.

Get packers in.

Trish
I personally would pack myself that way i would know where everything was and labelled correctly also you would know it was packed properly and nothing would break. And much cheaper :-)

joannie
We had a removal firm to load and take all our stuff, but they delivered flat pack boxes to us a week before we moved to pack ourselves.

Lauren Em
Look around at your stuff--how much of it do you think will be difficult or impossible to pack? Chances are, the majority of your stuff is not breakable (clothing, linens, toiletries, pots and pans, etc.) and you can get away with packing it yourself.

Now, make a list of everything that's glass, fragile, or otherwise breakable. Also list the stuff that you look at and go, "How in the *world* would I pack/wrap/protect that?"
And have the movers pack up just that stuff on that list.

I agree with you. I find it much easier to open up and organize a box that I packed myself, than it is to unpack a box packed by someone else. You know what logically goes together in a box, for the way you live--the movers don't. Good luck to you! =)

Tufty Porcupine
When we moved the movers dropped off the (flat) boxes, which we had to tape and pack ourselves - you don't have to but the boxes yourselves necessarily.
I suppose paying the movers to pack would reduce stress a lot and save time - they'll be very skilled and will doubtless do it all much quicker then you will and in the correct way.
We packed ourselves to save money and to pack them in a way that made sense to us.

Pack yourselves. Those guys don't care about your stuff, if you can find anything when you get there, or in what condition it arrives. Those are low wage positions where some of your stuff may actually come up missing.

Good tape makes up for alot of box fallibility. DO NOT scrimp on the cost of the packing tape.

There are plenty of inexpensive or free venues for boxes, liquor stores, grocery stores, furniture and appliance stores. Get plenty of newspaper to pack fragile items, if you don't have any, the local paper will sell roll ends cheap.

cornyginger
why don't you compromise

buy the boxes and pack the stuff up yourselves but get movers to help you on the day

they have all the right equipment and strength to move big items whereas you could hurt yourselves

then when they have shifted all the stuff for you you have the pleasure! of unpacking

good luck with your new flat

Pack yourself

rochelletherealtor
Using packers is way less stressful. You just stand there watching them do the work. They will pack in 3 hours what takes you 3 days. They have no emotional attachment to your stuff and are very efficient.

If you can afford it, pay the packers. They will put things exactly where you want them, label things way better than you can do it, bring their own boxes, etc.
