Make sure you have at least 6 months worth of living expenses in a savings account.
Do this in case you lose your job, get an unexpected medical expense, or have a serious car repair.
Any financial advisor will tell you that you should not live without this emergency account.
If you have this in oder - time to move out.

Put together a worksheet of how much you think you will be spending each month.
Ex: rent, utilities, car insurance, etc.
Review it with your parents.

Get your credit reports at
annual credit report. com
Landlords tend to check these.
Also be ready to have a copy of your checking account statement and savings if you don't have credit.

take pictures of the apartment before you move in. walk around see what lights are broken, the windows, the blinds. make a note of these things and send it to the manager.

get a tool kit.

if you are going to live alone, i recommend you select a second story unit. parking can be a huge deal so if you have a car and parking is touch get a unitw ith a spot.

i also recommend painting it or some walls before oyu move it to make it mroe home-y.

Make sure to budget your money for your expenses. Make sure what utilities you pay for. Dishwashers do not use that much electricity, so go ahead and use it. Shop at the Dollar Store - get things like aspirin, band-aids, pepto-bismol, cold medicine. That stuff is always on hand at your mom's, but when you're sick you won't want to go out and get any. Get cleaning supplies and toilet paper there too. You can live on apples and peanut butter. Vaccuum the carpet regularly - it really does pay off. Yes, your neighbors can hear you. You can hear them. too, so you might want earplugs to sleep. Make sure to lock the door behind you. Close the blinds. Get curtains for the bedroom. Have a couple of Pyrex type measuring cups - you can use them for microwave oatmeal, soup, etc. Use clear pushpins to hang things from the wall, its easy and they make small holes. Get organizers that hang over the door to get more space in closets. Get roach baits - every apartment has bugs.

Don't blow your budget on furniture. Visit secondhand shops/consignment stores/garage & yard sales for things you might need for furniture and furnishings.

Don't invest money into the place, i.e., don't go crazy and paint with extravagant colors, or change out light fixtures and flooring. It's a rental, you don't own it, and you should save money on upgrading things like that for a house, or an apartment that you own.

Make sure you changed your address with the post office and check in with your parents to make sure that your mail is slowing down at their place. Postal changes of address are only good for like a year, but sometimes mail doesn't get diverted and keeps going to your old address.

Pay close attention to due dates on your utility bills (unless your rent includes all utilities. In that case, just pay close attention to your rent due date.)

Good luck in your new place!

Make sure you have enough saved up to put down the security deposit on not only the apartment, but the water service (if not provided), electricity, and internet/TV service (if you choose to have it).

Your income should be about 3x what your rent is. Remember, you'll have to pay for everything yourself. Everything.

Choose roommates with care. Are the utility bills in your name? Make sure you have something signed between your roommates and yourself, that they will pay for their share of the bills, especially if something goes south. This shouldn't be offensive to them; it simply protects the friendship (and you) from getting in the way of business. It's amazing how the stress of living together can ruin what WAS a good friendship.

You'll need cleaning supplies of your own.

Does the apartment have washer/dryer? Dishwasher? Refrigerator? Make sure you have enough furniture and appliances before you move.

Will you need a moving truck, or are your parents going to help you?

(This is a little personal, but don't move in with your significant other the first time you move out. Please!)
