Big Guy
Moving into a new house with roommates; how do we decide who gets the bigger master bedroom?
I am about to rent a new house with two of my friends. However, one of the bedrooms in the new house is much larger, has its own full bathroom and a door out to the upper deck. How do we decide who gets this room?

All three of us found the house, all of us have equal amounts of stuff in volume and value, and all of us HATE picking straws...what other FAIR ways cans we decide who gets the room?

We have all already agreed that the person who gets the Master Bedroom has to pay a little more too, but now one is willing to "outbid" the others either. We're kind of stuck. HELP US OUT!

Eddie and I used to play golf to see who gets the better bedroom. He stopped challenging me after I won three months in a row.

Since everyone is willing to pay more, you have to find an arbitrary way to decide. Rock, paper scissors, drawing straws, eeny meeny miney moe, name out of a hat...this is the only fair way to do it.

Here's what I'd do.

Draw some random numbers (1-3).

Whoever gets #1 says what he's willing to pay per month for the big room.

#2 goes next and he can't match that -- he has to go at least $5 a month more. If he passes, he's out.

#3 goes next with the same rules.

Keep going until one person has agreed to pay an amount and nobody else will go $5/mo more.

If you all get stuck on the same $5 amount then whoever set that amount first will get the house.

If it isn't worth $5 more to outbid the guy, then he probably should get it anyhow.

That isn't really as random (other than the order) -- just make sure it is stuck to and that nobody gets caught up in the moment and bids something everyone KNOWS they won't pay.

Longest keg stand?

It shouldn't be about bidding. It should be about compromise. If you can't figure this out, I'd hate to see what happens when you actually "bump heads", which will happen.

Really, if you all want the room, the only fair way is to agree upon a method and go with that.

For, example, each draw a card from a deck and highest value wins (ace being high).

decide who is more responsible...who ever it is gets the room

rockerdude262
Who ever makes the most money should get it. Whom evers job is more stable.

Whoever makes the most money should be able to have the biggest bedroom. This way in exchange for the best room, the other two who make less money get off cheaper.

i sense future problems coming on.

before you rent the house, find a trusted
professional person and ask them [for
a small fee] to be a mediator regarding
any problems with the house and new
roommates.
