First make sure you know this person very well. One room gets very crowded. Living on your own is good but you need to be sure of your roommates.

Don't take anything with you to your new place that you can't live without for the rest of your life. Leave pictures and sentimental stuff and realy valuable stuff at home with your parents.

Odds are, you will end up not so friendly toward the end, so enjoy being her friend now.

If I were you, I would stay at home, go to school, work and save my money and when you graduate you will have enough for a down payment on a house of your own. Having roommates is not what you think. You two will be wild at first, party, have boys over, then you will argue and eventually your grades will suffer.

This is not the time to get sidetracked. You are on the proper path, you are in college and working. Don't screw it up over wanting to have fun. The big picture is way more important. Not to mention girls your age are at a higher risk living alone for rapes and kidnapping.

Draw up a broad agreement BEFORE you move in together. Its difficult living with someone. Be kind, and don't let the little stuff bother you. Good Luck!

Two eighteen year old living in an apartment together?? Do you know of someone who has an garage or basement that you could rent for one month? It is not easy living with another person that is your same age.

My sister thought it would be nice to share a place with two other girls. One person had the small bedroom and the other two girls share a bedroom. It sound great, but after they moved in, the problems begin. One girl worked nights, so she thought it would be OK to invite a co-worker to come over for a drink after work.

One girl decided that she could eat anything in the refrigerator whether she paid for it or not.

One girl like to stay along time in the bathroom and talk on the phone to her boyfriend. She did not care that they only had one bathroom.

My sister liked to have the apartment clean in the morning before she when to work. She went to school two nights a week, and she got home around 10 pm. Sometimes the sink would be full of dirty dishes or someone had eaten some dessert that she had plan to eat that night.

It was lucky that they signed a month to month rental agreement, because she moved out after three months and got an apartment by herself.

I moved to an ap with my best friend and it did work!!! we paid rent & utilities, 1/2 and 1/2, we cleaned the apt once per week, and we had the whole week to do it but all at once, we took care of our rooms, to clean or not to clean, that was own thinig, I worked from 9 am to 2 pm she did from 3pm to 10 pm, so we had the apt for our selves, without having each other on the other nerves, we got along very well, she brought food from the airplanes (she was a stewardess)
and at 11 pm we were tasting food from france, wine etc etc,
we had good time together, sharing a home, and both very responsi ble with our bills, and never a problem, we lived for 5 yrs

Dude
Write out a list of 'dealbreaker' rules. The thing is you want to remain friends and have dreams of it being the best times ever. Truth is, you risk it not working out that way unless there is complete understandings up front on what is expect from each other.

Examples such as maybe you like being in bed at 11 during the week because you have to work at a certain time..maybe they get back from work at 11 and like to stay up..that could cause a problem. One's a neatfreak and the other has no problem with a mess.

How are bills going get paid? Write it all out that bills are paid and money is gathered 10 days before a bill is actually due. I know that sounds crazy and it's psychological but all it is training yourself on an earlier bill paying cycle that gives you two weeks to cover expenses if something does come up. This will help cut down on 'surprises' when a day before something is due that "oh I don't have it this month, I had to get tires on my car, can you spot me my half of the rent/power bill" things that do and will come up.

If you are excellent friends now, an important thing to understand is that you are both taking and chance and this may NOT work out and it's something that can harm a friendship. You both have to be strong and be able to say "This is not working for me, i don't want to ruin our friendship but it's better for it if we end this arrangement now" if it does come to that. You can come away with the friendship still intact.

You never truly know someone until you live with them. I have a best friend of 34 years and had we stayed in college together in the same place I doubt it would have lasted.

With all that said, it's a great experience to go through because you do grow and learn a lot about yourself and other people. Go for it! and Best of luck!

Make sure you guys are able to split things equally like electric bills, gas bills, water, food, who does what to clean the rooms, and etc. This will help you be able to keep things organized and no conflicts will happen.

When looking for an apartment:

-ask about pests (bugs, mice)

-try all the water faucets including the shower to check water pressure

-make sure the parking situation is good

-find out which utilites are included and how much an average monthly payment is for the ones you pay for

-make sure that the landlord does all the yardwork

-if the apartment is yucky looking make sure to ask if they are repainting/recarpeting before you move in

-READ your lease and also get a copy of the tenant/landlord rights and responsibilities from the city so you know what is legal or not on your lease

-get boxes from local bookstores and grocery stores or craigslist "free" listings
