tasha h | Moving out and don't want to take roaches with me? |
I have roaches in my current apartment. There aren't a LOT of roaches (I have SEEN 5 or 6 total within 3 months, 4 or 5 alive and one dead, but where there are 5, I'm scared there are 5,000) but I am worried that they'll get into my boxes and things and come with me when I move. They are the reason I'm moving out in the first place, my management isn't really taking care of the problem and I feel gross. Is there anything I can do to help prevent them from coming with me? Suggestions welcome. |

Before you leave bomb your house with roach spray - In every box you pack put in one roach trap. |

Yes there is...the best thing that you can do...and it will require ALOT of washing and cleaning, is to "bomb" your apartment a day or so before the move and do ALL of your packing after the bomb/fogger.
Keep in mind, that EVERYTHING needs to be washed...clothes, dishes, any cardboard food containers need to be thrown away (cereal, pastas)...so eat out after that.
You can go through your clothes piece by piece of put them in PLASTIC (not cardboard) containers so you won't have to wash everything.
Go to Walmart, and get a FULL, zippered plastic mattress cover...keep it on your mattress for a minmum of 3 months after your move.
The only other major area will be things like a portable microwave and your couches...I have actually witnessed moves where a mover will drop one end of the couch and it's like a roach bomb b/c they scatter everywhere.
I am so sorry you are having to go through that. Happened to me in college and it was a nightmare. |

Roaches love corrugated boxes. they can't sleep unless both the top and bottom of their bodies are covered. ....
This can be a big problem. Once a female roach is impregnated. they are pregnant for life and can have baby roaches often without a mate thereafter. Even once the female is dead the eggs can still hatch many days later. You also don't want to get the eggs on your clothes or shoes.
They can survive for 30 days without food but can only live a week without water...so make sure the place is very dry...If they can't eat or drink they'll die. do not leave cardboard boxes around and make sure food is stored away. After a few weeks bomb the house/apartment. Brink boxes from the outside and pack them and move them. put traps inside the boxes and clean all your clothes and dip your shoes in a small bleach concentrate when you leave the last day to kill any eggs you can't see. Nothing's fool proof... but just be sure to be very clean. Fill and caulk all the cracks in the new place.. make sure there's no leaks or water and keep all the food away. they won't survive. |

You just have to check your boxes and belongings really well. |

hmmm....
how about, when you're moving clothes... bring them to a launderette/dry cleaner and have them cleaned. Then don't take them back to your old place - put them in a big bin-liner and bring them to your new place (or leave them at a friends place).
Use 1 room in your current apartment to do all your packing... and spray it well with powerful Roach killer (Baygon) before you pack any. Spray every crack and corner and window and door. Also, if you're moving furniture, it wouldn't be any harm to spray the drawers that they could transport themselves in.
It's a tough one, but I know where you're coming from - I saw a cockroach in my room recently and thought, well for every 1 I see, there's probably 25 that I don't see. Eeeuggh. |
