Moving out, young and scared. How much does it cost?
I'm 16, and due to familial issues, I've resolved that it's better for my own health that I move out on my own. I do not have a job yet, but I am applying at several places full time on top of school. There are several apartments in my town for sale. How much could living in an apartment building in a small town cost?

My plan is to use electricity at a MINIMUM. I'd have the regular kitchen appliances, plus washer and dryer. My lights would remain OFF for the majority of the time. Charging a laptop, and a TV system. That's the extent of my electricity ( i hope). Food, water, rent, electricity, etc.

On an average level, how much would all this cost per month?
Additional Details
I actually tried that, and the parents said it was fine, but my dad called them and told them I drink constantly and am mentally sick... Which is so very untrue!

It would be illegal for anyone to rent to a child. Even if you could afford it there is no way anyone would rent to you. Your parents could also get into trouble, letting you live alone would be Child Endangerment, for which they would be arrested. Any other children of theirs would be taken.

Find another solution for your puberty problems, this is not one of them.

Stay home because it costs way too much. It also takes a very mature individual to make very important decisions on a daily basis. One must be prepared for the unexpected which can be very costly. In short; not only does living out on your own cost way too much, there is much more to it than just figuring your basic bills, and they always cost more than you prepare for. Concentrate on school only, then plan for college or a 2 year skills training certificate. Many well educated single adults can't even find a job right now, but when the position is between an educated person and a high school drop out, 10 times out of 10 they will higher the educated person!

SRC 50 is right, you cannot rent an apartment until you are 18, unless it's some kind of shady deal. Food: 300 Water: Included Rent: 600 Electric: 120. How are you going to get around? walk? bus? there are alot of other costs. Health care/Medicine. Most places make you put up money up front to move in, usually the first month's rent worth, so you need an extra 600. Unless you can share with someone or have a good job I would not move out yet. Maybe stay with a friend?

Reena
To get an idea... look into your local newspaper and make calls to prospective landlords that are advertising their rental units in the paper.

Let's assume that an apartment costs around $500 a month in rent.
A small studio apartment just right for a single person.

You would need at least $1000 to move in. $500 first month rent and $500 security deposit. (Although security deposit could be more).
Then you need to turn on your utilities (gas and electricity) and since you are a new customer the utility company might require that you pay a deposit. (let's say they want $200). Same goes for the phone company... but you could just not have a home phone.

To save on electricity... you need to really inspect your rental unit.
Only if you have energy efficient main appliances (water heater, A/C and heating system) will you be able to save money. Also important: check out what kind of insulation and windows your place has. If your place is old and drafty... you will pay more in utilities because your heat escapes in the winter and your A/C works overtime in the summer to keep your house cool when the place can't contain the heat/cold because of all the gaps in the windows and doors.

Next problem: Food. Even as a single kid you will need at least $200 a month to feed yourself.

Rent: $500
Utilities - with any luck $100
Food: $200

Min. expenses a month $800.

The reality is this. Even with a part time job after school you won't make enough money to support yourself and an apartment.
The fact that you are 16 and can't sign a rental contract is besides the point.

If your situation at home is so unbearable then you need to contact Child Protective Services and ask to be removed and put in a Foster home.

You can't move out unless you are legally emancipated. No landlord will rent to a minor.

MissV
My friend, you're not ready. If you were, you'd know that the apartments are not for sale: they're for rent.

Before you step out the door, talk with a landlord.

Most landlords will require that you not only have a job, but that it provides sufficient income to pay the rent. This will be based on their terms, not yours. The utilities supplier (electricity, water, telephone) will require a deposit.

Unemployment is high everywhere. Meaning that people with high school degrees and PhDs are just as unemployed as high school dropouts.

Despite whatever is going on at home, you need to strongly consider staying long enough to abide by the rules of the person whose name is on the mortgage or lease. Save some money. Finish school.

If you're offended by what I've said you're definitely not ready. Because no matter how grown we think we are (I'm over 50), we still need to be adult enough to accept criticism. Until we can pay our own pay.

So: do you have around $5000 to get started?

Cat
Rent varies a great deal depending on the city you live in. A small plains-state town, you could rent a place for $200 a month. In L.A or New York, there's precious little less than $1500 a month.

Call around and inquire about the rent in your area. Just start shopping - you'll get a sense of what the going monthly rental rate is. Keep in mind, that rents will also vary with the area of your city. Higher-income areas will have high rents. Higher crime areas will be cheap.

At 16 you legally cannot move anywhere. No one will grant you a lease. You have no idea about living alone anyway. Living in the dark wouldn't decrease your electric bills. Your best choice is to deal with your family and forget about moving unless you have a family member to move in with.

So you've got issues to settle then. But you are not alone. Everybody got their issues too. Perhaps you have to decide what is best for you especially when the time and place you are into is so compellingly cruel (at least in your own description).

Nothing But Truth
Do you know what "the" truth is? That there is none.
There being none means that everything is.

If you really want to move out, ask your best friend's parents if you can stay at their house for a week. It may seem like a short amount of time, but it is amazing how much better your life will seem, because you will realize that EVERYBODY has family issues. Living in someone else's family for a week will be good for you.

You cannot live on your own because you have no money, you are a minor, and you have no clue.
