Popotitozz R | My Boyfriend doesn't pay for anything? |
I live with my boyfriend. I pay $750 for rent each month. It's his house so he pays the rest of his mortgage which is $2100. My price is supposed to include utilities but he is making me pay more because the utilities were high last month. He also pays my cell phone bill in its entirety.
We divide groceries 1/2 and 1/2.
When we go out, he wants me to pay for my part of the bill, I find it ridiculous because he is MY BOYFRIEND. He never gives me any presents or surprises and sometimes pays for the entire bill. Sometimes I do to. He thinks that the realtionship should be 50 50. Am I right for being upset about this?
At the beginning of the relationship we were broke and he used to pay the whole rent by himself because I didnt work. He rubs it on my face all the time. He thinks I should pay $800 for rent now.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? |

2100 for rent, cell phone, half of utilites, half of groceries, is what he pays
800 rent, half of groceries, plus half going out expenses
1) sometimes people have to see it visually to get it. I think he is paying more than enough and asking you to pay when your out is not rediculous.
2) It wouldnt hurt him to do something spontaneous once in a while. And if you guys do get serious and get married your money is his and his money is yours, financial responsibility is very tough to get used to when your a couple.
3) The past is the past, he cant keep bringing up the past, he could lose his job tomorrow, and what could he say then? |

Well, he is paying more than you are so I think it's nice that he isn't making you pay half. What's wrong with both paying for things 50/50 sometimes? It's nice to treat eachother sometimes and you could talk to him about that. Money should be no reason for you to fight. Talk it out, you guys can work it out. |

Wow.. how selfish.. of *YOU*. This arguement is over an increase of $50 per month? Are you kidding me? He pays for your cell phone and WELL over half the mortgage amount. And wanting you to pay for your part of the bill and you scoff at it? I'm a man who believes the man should pay, but once you're shacked up as if you're married, then you ACT as if you're married. You get the full run of the house and only pay $800/mo plus 1/2 of the groceries? You're getting a great deal. Just because he's your BOYFRIEND doesn't mean you are allowed to leech off of him. You are 100% wrong to be upset about this. And as for the other gold diggers who are posting here... shame on you. Sounds to me like you were a prissy pampered little girl growing up and are now facing the realities of life. It costs him a lot of money to keep up YOUR lifestyle. I'm willing to bet there's more to this story and i bet he pays for more than just his 65% of the monthly housing bill and your cell phone. Basically what i'm saying here is... if you don't want to be married, don't live with him.. just move out and date him instead... maybe he'll act more like a "boyfriend" instead of a "roomate" who expects you to pay half. |

He pays $2100 and you pay $750? He's paying $25,200/yr. to your $9,000/yr. just on the mortgage! Come on! You should be begging to help out more! Go get your own place and see what you end up paying! I think you'll find you have it pretty good right where you are! |

a relationship is 50/50 unless one or the other is loaded and it's agreed the one with the most will pay for all
apparently he is having a problem with money issues, he thinks he's paying to much, so either pay up or move out
he is a boyfriend not husband, should not be living together anyway |

well you said he pays your cell phone bill and he pays half on groceries and other stuff so hes paying stuff. also you shouldn't expect him to pay every thing even though you are boyfriend and girlfriend. |

Sorry, I agree with the boyfriend.
If you think the relationship should be 50/50, then why don't you start paying for $1050 per month for the mortgage and 50% of all of the utilities?
What you are forgetting is that he is NOT your husband, he is your boyfriend, with a house he doesn't want you a legal part of.
I agee with his offer. |

Break up with him or withold sex. :-) That would teach him! Just kidding.
Sounds like he's feeling like the relationship isn't equal in some way. He's feeling pressured in some way. Talk it out with him, let him know how you feel. Have him examine the pros and cons of having you there with him. |

Sometimes being shacked up can be difficult. At least you are getting a good handle on how things would be in a permanent relationship. |

It sound as if you are unhappy. Did you have a clear explanation of the money situation before you moved in?
Perhaps you should make some new housing arrangements. |

oh, gosh. It's only my opinion, but I think he just wants you for sex and he is greedy. I'm so sorry. That's just the boyfriend/girlfriend part. As far as rent goes, he could charge you half plus half utilities, but he's paying your cell phone too. You're getting the good end of the deal there! Still, I don't think it sounds like a good relationship at all. It's not right he rubs it in your face. If he had another renter and had an outside girlfriend instead, she would probably expect him to pay for dates. I would, but I am old fashioned. Your boyfriend is self centered, immature and stingee. I don't know how to spell that. I'm 44 ,you'd think I'd know... |

Sounds like my ex Fiance.... After we started to live togeather, heaven forbid he'd ever take me out on a date. I made less than half he did, but he wanted to live the life he wanted and I had to pay half (which was ALL my money, and he'd have the gall sometimes to ask me for a loan)! If you don't have any ties to him (children, marrage, other things as such) I'd say get out. He's leaching off of you. You are making enough to get your own place (I live in california, and I pay 1350/mo for a 2 br 1.5 bath town house). I'm not sure where you are in the world, but I'm sure you could get a 1 br place for a good price. You don't need the stress, and what he is doing to you is stressful (from experience!). |

The path that both of you are on right now is very dangerous. This will lead to many many arguments about who is responsible for what and will cause alot of friction. This will develop into other problems as well, trust, respect...etc etc....If you two are truly serious about your future you both are going to have to sit down and work this out. Me and my wife had the same problems.....here was our solution. It can be tweaked to meet your own needs but IT WORKS...
First, open a joint banking account...I know this might seem scary but hold on.
Secondly, keep your own personal accounts open.
Third...everything that you and your bf earns every month should be placed in the joint account and this is will be considered as a mutual account no matter who makes more than whom. The rule is that me and my wife consider this "our" money and we never argue about who makes what...we're a team and we work together for the same cause.
Fourth...decide on a monthly or weekly petty spending budget for both of you. distribute evenly 5-25% of what you earn and split into the two seperate accounts...this will be your petty accounts...starbucks....gum...cigs...wha... This will also let you feel like you are still in control of some money. At first my wife was asking me to use our money for things like this so it wasn't working. so we opened seperate accounts to solve this petty spending issue. Now she still feels like she is in control instead of asking my permission...yuk
Fifth....now that you are both equals and have ONE main account, use that account to pay bills and make mutual purchases. If you both want to manage the account, great! My wife lets me manage our account and we go out to dinner I pay with our account and speak nothing of splitting anything. She feels like she is being taken care of like a lady should and she doesn't have to worry about money as well..win win.
The concept here is to create an environment where both of you are equals no matter who the real bread winner is. Check the egos at the door and work together to create this relationship. Another plus side of this plan is that you will both start to respect one another more because of it. Of course this can be tweaked over time...but this saved us from the same old argument of money that most couples are plagues with. |

Boyfriend?
It sounds like you are paying for over 35% of his mortage. Are you listed as a Joint Tenant?
If he wants $800 ask him to but your name on the deed. |

A real man would not make you pay for anything, It would be nice for you to make the suggestion and help him pay some bills, but then again he did pay for rent for the two of you for awhile. So I guess your in a tough situation, I could never be with a man that wouldn't get the check when we got out, or give gifts..that's plan old cheap!! |

Find a new guy who will pay for everything. You probably don't feel loved unless a guy pays for everything, so just find someone who will be happy what you ask for.
Some men are happy to provide and maybe you just aren't a good match with your current guy. |

I don't think it's fair that you should pay him rent, esp not 750 a month. he's your boyfriend, not your landlord, so he shouldn't charge you rent. You also shouldn't pay any into his house. It's HIS house, with only his name on the deed. I think you probabaly should just keep paying for half groceries like you are and maybe help pay some of utilities. |
