sdsherman | My Central Air Ducks Make A Periodic Cracking Noise? |
My condo has central air for heat and air conditioning. I notice periodically my central air ducks will make a cracking noise even when the AC or heat is not on for a couple of days. The cracking noise is in random locations throughout my condo. I live on the top floor. What is causing th cracking noise? How can I stop it? Should I be worried? |

Are you sure it's not a *quacking* noise? |

My air ducks do too. But it seems like you're talking about air DUCTS. |

if it's thermal expansion causing the noises, maybe check the insulation on the ductwork. if not you may have some duct knocked loose. may not have been properly installed with screws AND tape supported properly. |

If they're central air DUCKS then what you are hearing is a periodic QUACKING noise.
If they're DUCTS, then that's another issue. |

Are you sure it is the Central Air Ducts? When you say ducks, I want to say quacking noise. lol However, I realize you mean ducts and cracking. Could it be wiring? Or the actual building structure? I would check with neighbors if you know any and certainly have it checked out! |

I couldn't get past your air"ducks". Made me lmao...Your so funny, but I don't think you ment to be. Sorry, thanks for the smile... |

Sounds like they need insulation and duct tape, on the outside surface... |

may be bird/pigeon activity, maybe wind, maybe expansion contraction, I would not worry |

My guess is these ducts are sheet metal and periodically with heating or cooling or for no reason you hear a kind of "boom" sound. I had a similar problem that seemed to come about 3-4 minutes after my heat or ac kicked off.
I was told this caused by the air pushing the side of the duct outward (1-2mm) and then when the air is gone these snap back. Go to Home Depot and push on one side of a long straight run of duct work (especially the square duct). You will find that one side that can move a bit. This movement amplified with the acoustic nature of duct work creates this sound. |
|

But, Mom!
|
Are you sure their not "quacking". You ducts are just old. They are expanding and contracting from the pressure of the air being forced through them. |
