Tenants smoked in my house, and I need to get rid of the smell.
I have carpets and tile floors.
Other than steaming the carpets, any other suggestions?

It depends on your lease. if you are under a lease, then no, they cannot do that. If you rent month-to-month, then yes, your lease can change every month. Certain states do have additional laws, but that's pretty much how it is. |

Without a lease, you have nothing to protect you from the landlord raising the rent as much has he/she pleases. I only know of one state that has a rental cap....California. |

Not where I live. Here they can only raise the rent 15% per year at the most. You should contact your local housing authority. They can inform you of what the law is in your area. |

all depends on what your lease says. landlords can raise to what they want if they aren't a rent-controlled apt. |

If you are in the middle of a 1 year (or more) lease then no, it cannot be raised.
If you are in a rent controlled area, there are laws stating how much it can be raised. This would need some research.
If you are on a month to month lease, and not in a rent controlled area then yes, this is perfectly legal.

California does NOT have a rental cap! Two cities do, LA proper and SF cap at 5% a year.
The 3/1 is legal. The one for 1/1 depends on when you were told. You need 30 days notice.
It is weird he did not just raise it 135 and be done with it. |

In australia it is illegal for a landloard to increase the rent before the lease has ended (i dont know if this helps or applys to u) if you are in australia go to the r.t.a (residential tenants authorty they are sue to help you) |
