My Landlord refuses to allow me to have a cat. He was extremely aggressive towards me and claims they're dirty
What can I do?
I called him and his reasons for his instant refusal were that cats are "dirty, flea-ridden animals" and he hung up on me.
When I called him again, I stated that I am a rent paying tenant and just because I am a student, it doesn't give him the right to talk to me the way in which he did.

He gave me no reasons through our discussion other than cats are dirty etc. What can I do? I am aware it is in our tenancy agreement to have written consent from him before having a pet live with us so I can't sneak the cat in and I'm more than aware his word is near enough final.

He is a terrible landlord, has only visited the house TWICE in the year we've lived there and his attitude towards me was more than unacceptable.

Any help would be great thanks :D

This cat (currently an 8 week old Kitten, I'm waiting until she's 12 weeks to move her in) is adorable and will have nowhere to live otherwise and neither me nor my partner could bare to see her go.

Thank you, people of Yahoo.

Ok, depending on your lease, he can refuse you to have a pet of any kind, but if he has allowed others to have a pet, especially the type you want, I would bring that up. Landlords can deny a tenant the ability to have a pet. BUT if the animal is to assist you in life, ie you have depression problems and the animal helps you reduce it, then it is considered a therapy animal. You would still have to produce vet records and you would have to have a letter from your doctor stating that due to the condition, you must have it.

he owns the and he has the right to refuse pets.

Landlord
This is his property. If he does not want cats then he does not have to have cats on his property.

You need to move if you can not live with this. Buy a place of your own, then you can decide what animals will be inside it.

You should never have gotten the kitten since you did not have the landlord's written permission first. Landlords have the right to determine the terms of the lease. No pets and no smoking are two of the commonest restrictions on apartment rentals.

Being a sucker for a stray cat myself, find this baby-cat another home in a hurry or move as soon as possible. You don't want a slumlord anyway -- is the lease about up if you've been there a year?

Sorry he said no cats. Cats especially until they are fixed can and will urinate on things like carpet, the only way to get rid of the smell is to replace the carpet, it is a very hard odor to get rid of that is the most likely reason. So the decision is your's apartment, or cat? You are not going to change his mind on this so that is where it stands

People like you use inflamatory words too easily. You say "extremely agressive." To me that is nose-to-nose arm-waving schrieking with his spittle coming onto my face.

Perhaps you mean he is no-nonsense and a bit rude?

You asked him if you could have a pet and he said no. Case closed, whatever his reasons. It's in the contract. You signed it.

If you are willing to see your house go, then by all means take the cat in. If you were my tenants it would be cause for immediate initiation of the eviction procedure.

You made an agreement with the landlord. He has told you no. You have to uphold your side of the agreement. Find a foster home for the kitten to go to until you can find a new place to live. Don't give this jerk any more of your money. Find a nice place where you and your cat can live happily.

What is there to do? You can't force the landlord to change his policy nor can you you force someone to be nice and professional. FYI: there are jerks in the world and being respectful is only a courtesy -- not a legal requirement.

What do you mean "aggressive"? Did he actually threaten you? Or did he merely talk loudly and emphasize why he does not allow pets? If he previously told you that pets are not allowed, then I can understand why he would be upset being asked again. There are only so many ways to say no.

You don't know what your landlord's prior experiences are. Cats can have fleas, urinate, fray carpets, and scratch woodwork. Repairing and replacing flooring can easily exceed your security deposit leaving your landlord having to sue you for his repair costs.

A landlord visiting a house twice is more than we've ever visited our house rentals in a year. Unless there are major repair issues, most tenants do not want their landlords coming over often [especially if they are hiding pets :) ].

You have a few options: Find an unprofessional health professional to prescribe the cat as a "service animal" and abuse ADA law. Or you can move.

look on your contract if there is nothing about not having a pet let him ***** all he wants if he only comes round twice a year you could bring the kitten home b-sides they box train quickly

If your landlord says no cats- then no cats- You might want to find a place that allows them , If you get one and your not supposed to have it- he canthrow you out
