My Old Land lord wants my forwarding address do i have to give it to him ?
we had a bad ending of our time there and he told me i was losing my deposit so do i have any obligation to give him my address ~ the post office already has it and has already forwarded my mail to me , i really just want to wash my hands of him and be done with it .

Thanks for the help so far . I dont know what he wants with it so i will prob call and ask the problem is he is very much an SOB and said he used my entire deposit on Bug spray ( which i moved in to a small bug problem and on a monthly cycle we had asked him to take care of it ) The house was not well taken care of when we moved in but we returned it CLOSE to the same as we got it ( normal wear )

The situation is very simple, land lords ask for a forwarding address if properties arn't on a meter to ensure you don't do a bunk without clearing the bills. To stop people giving a false forwarding address, this is where they will post your security bond which means you have to give your real details.

In your case, you've been told the land lord will not be returning the deposit. I would therefore use the words 'I'm planning on traveling and therefore have no fixed forwarding address'. Its less confrontational than a direct 'no'.

To me it sounds like the land lord is a bit out of order so if your looking for a very effective yet subtle way of getting back at him, get yourself a bag of prawns and on your last day cram a few in curtain poles, behind heaters and behind draws etc. Once they warm up and start rotting they will really hum (trust me) and then it will make it hard to rent to someone else because of the smell. It will also be a real ***** to locate the source of the smell and could take him months to resolve.

no...just tell him to sent it to your old address and the post office will forward it to you...right?

Oh my god, my boyfriend had the same problem a few months ago and he used that same term. He called his uncle ( a laywer) and we found out that landlords give all their tenents HELL when they leave. They will take the deposit for no reason or make one up. If you get a lawyer to write them a letter, you can fight for that deposit back. The new address is just bull for them to give you the letter saying what money they're taking back and why they've taken it. You can give it to him, he's not going to stalk you or anything, I think it's normal for them to demand that so you don't come pounding on their doors. Seriously though, fight it. Once he hears "lawyer", he'll give it up.

No, you're not obligated to, but apparently he can contact you to let you know he wants it. Why not call him and ask why he wants it? Maybe he reconsidered and is mailing a partial return of your deposit. OTOH, maybe he's filing a lawsuit against you and wants it to serve papers on you. Either way, it would be helpful to know. And chances are he'll eventually be able to get if off the Internet, so why not find out what's up? Knowledge is power.

You are not obligated to provide it at all. If you want it over with, don't give it. He can send mail to your old address and it can be delivered but he won't be sent the new addy. He could go online and get it though. Just tell him NO.

If it says on your lease that you must provide the landlord with a forwarding address, then you must. I know on my leases I say to include a forwarding address. But, if you had a bad ending I'm sure he feels the same way to wash his hands of you, and I doubt he'd use your contact info anyway. Here's what I suggest: Double check your lease to see if it says anything requiring a forwarding address. If it doesn't, case closed. If it does and you really really really don't want to give it to him, then don't. The only thing he can then do is sue you, and I know I wouldn't sue a tenant for not giving me a promised address. It's a waste of time, money, and energy. But if this guy is a true SOB he might sue you just because he is an SOB, and then it wastes your money. It's your call. I really don't think he could do anything bad with your forwarding address. If I ever need to use the forwarding address of my former tenants, it's to ask or tell them something pertaining to their time here.

If he is not giving you back you deposit, then he has to reason to collect you new address. If he keeps bothering you about it, then report him for harassment.
