You have the right to move. Period.

No one is under a legal obligation to rent to you forever.

As they are not evicting you, this is not legally retaliation, simply a non-renewal.

In most states you are entitled to a 60 day notice after 5 years under these circumstances.

You have the legal right to move. You can not force them to renew your lease. Start cleaning out the closets and have a yard sale. No sense moving stuff you really don't want or need.

bull_rooster_aardvark
No, you have no legal recourse. As long as they are not being discriminatory or something then this is perfectly legal to do. As a landlord I simply raise the rents on tenants I have trouble with and sometimes don't renew if I really had lots of trouble with them. Its perfectly legal, if they don't like it they can move (which is what I'm hoping) but if I have to deal with them then the extra rent is my compensation for the annoyance.

acermill
No, you don't. Landlords aren't required to renew a lease if they do not want to, as long as federal and state anti-discrimination laws are not violated. Welcome to the world of renting.

They don't have to give you a reason, and they don't have to renew your lease. You don't have any rights to property that you do not own.

Groovejivey
It's doubtful. You would really have to consult with an attorney on this one, since a good real estate attorney would be knowledgeable about the law concerning this situation in your area. Most places have a clause in the lease agreement that states the agreement is "at will", meaning that either party to the agreement has the right to terminate at their discretion for any or no reason. Good luck...

Classy Granny
No matter how long you've been there, they have a right not to renew your lease and they do not have to give you a reason. Your only legal right is a 30 day notice to move

The only legal right you have is to 30 days notice, The owners/management can't come at you 2 weeks before you lease expires and tell you "we're not renewing your lease, get out" they have to give you at least 30 days notice, otherwise no. If they choose not to renew your lease that's their right nor are the obligated to disclose the reason for their decision.

estielmo
You have the right to move. The property belongs to them. They have honored the contract and now it is finished. They don't need to give any reason. Just as you have the right to move without giving them a reason.

Michelle W
Unfortunately no. They do need to give you 30 days notice to vacate your apt though. I'm sure you'll find a much better place with better mgmt. It is their loss for turning away a good paying tenant in this market.

. Don't try to stay. Life has too many adventures. A better place awaits you. If you stay, the person in their office will target you.
