My boyfriend is on incapacity benefit and im on income support & were moving in together will dss pay?
We have a 8 month old daughter, but im planning to go back to university for my last year this month. We have just got the keys to our new home, but im scared that if they take me off income support, we wont get housing benefit. For uni i will only be getting £50.00 a week (grant), so thats less than you get for income support. Some one please help! Thanks guys xx

my boyfriend is unable to work due to his illness so don't bother judging him! There are millions of people out there who 'milk' the system and im definitely not one of them! If i wanted to 'milk' the system i wouldn't bother trying to finish my degree off to get a good job!

Thought I`d give you a proper answer to your questions!

The answer is yes, the DSS will pay for you both. Its most likely that you will come off income support, but your boyfriends incapacity benefit will be raised to cover you both. You`ll also be entitled to housing benefit and council tax relief.

I am sympathetic to your case, as years ago I was in the same situation when I went down with a particularly nasty illness, and was classified as disabled for 3 years. I was living with an ex at the time and her kids, and she was previously on income support. My incapacity benefit took over and paid for us all.

You just need to go down to the DSS together, with id, birth certificates, passports etc, so you are prepared and it won't hold things up.

I`ve since recovered and am back paying for myself and family again. The way I see it is that I was more than entitled to those years of benefit with the amount of tax I paid before and after.

Thats what its for, however I don't agree with people who live all their lives on benefits and never put anthing back! I can see though that if you are going to Uni you are bettering yourself, and will be contributing to society later on, so I think you are more than entitled to benefits.

Hope it all works out well for you!

Prodigal Son
Sorry to hear of your plight, You should really make the DSS aware of your situation I'm sure they'll be able to help you sweetheart, without sounding sarcastic isn't yourself or your boyfriend able to work at least part time?

Hope this helps and wish you all the best in your last year at university!!

Good luck

You will be classed as a couple and re assessed.........But that's OK I don't mind footing the bill for your education as well as paying for my children's.........Tell your boyfriend to get a job and you may be able to teach your child some old fashioned values like earning money to pay your way......

jed slade
you will both need to be re assessed, you may have a nice surprise.

Bren
even if u only get 50 u should be able to get child tax credit . try asking your local citizens advice bureau they may be able to advise u on your benefits. good luck back at uni, im sure once its completed u will get a good job.

You can't get Income support as a single parent if you're living with a partner.
If you told social security about your change of circumstances I think your partner would get more money for the both of you. But your money would stop.
He could still claim housing benefit.

confucious says
with the details you have supplied no real answer can be given not enough detail you will have to apply and trust to luck but on the few details you have given I would say yes you will be entitled to IS

sirberty127
get your boyfriend to look after your child and go get a part time job!

sporregar
I have no idea if they'll pay. Why don't you call the office and ask them.

It was something you should have found out before hand.

Also, not good for 2 people on disability (the dole) to have a kid and expect even more money from the government.

Perhaps you need to put off going to the uni and get a job while your bf watches the kid. Can't leech off the system forever. Well, perhaps in England you can.

peter o
why not they seen to be paying for everything else.

honest girl!
If your boyfriend is too sick to work then I suggest you get a job. It seems that you more reliant on this whole benefits system, and not being funny but if the government decided to scrap it tomorrow morning what on earth would you and your boyfriend do??

There are plenty of mothers out there who juggle their studies and work full time/part time to make ends meet without claiming benefits.

By the way you wouldn't be entitled to Income Support if you are living with a partner. Its down to you to contact the Jobcentre and inform them of any change of circumstances.
