My boyfriend wants me to work?
I moved to a new apartment that is $30/mo. in NYC. Previously we paid, $1200 per month.

The rent is based on my income. So the more I make the more rent I pay.

I am an unemployed full-time student and have a 5 month old baby. My boyfriend is the only breadwinner but now behaves as if we have no expenses even though our rental payment is nearly 100% less than before.

All of our expenses are the SAME (babysitter, light, gas) except the $1170 difference in rent.

I don't think it makes sense for me to work as it would cut in to my studies, my time with my son and the rent will go up. I'll basically be working to pay rent.

Thoughts.

You crack me up. Nice responses to all of your "answers". You certainly had me rolling.

As far as your initial question goes, it seems like your logic is correct. If in fact you have these special conditions, why work if it will all be going directly towards the rent? That would essentially mean you would be working for nothing and that time you could spend with your child and studying (a education is key to your entire families success). Explain your reasoning, and he really should be more understanding.

Why don't you work in your home? As a babysitter? You don't need to make a ton, like $3.00 or something an hour. It would give you something to do, make your bf happy and you would still be at home with your baby. Your bf needs to realize he made a baby and there are choices to be made, sometimes they aren't easy. This includes working full time. Like you said, the more money you make the more you will need to pay and it will be gone anyways-it won't be really helping you guys out any.

Good luck...

hi you stick to what you are doing now,it would be foolish to work now the time with you're son at this early stage will never come again so enjoy it,why miss out on him growing ,and keeping up the studies is giving you the opportunity to give him a good start later in life when you will be in a position to get a very well paid job, just make him see reason and if he wants the best for you and youre child he will listen to you, good luck.

30 dollars in new york!? Right, well I imagine since your obviously not disabled or just not a case of you cannot work, your rent in controlled because you have an infant and are home caring for her?

Your living off the state when you are certainly capable of working. There are millions of SINGLE mothers out there that have infants and still have to get their butts out there and work, to pay their rent, FULL rent. School or not.

Live it up while you can, thats not going to last forever. Eventually you will have to pay the entire amount of rent just like the rest of us.

If I were you I would try to explain it to your boyfriend the way you explained it here. If he doesn't agree I would think he is thinking of his own best interest and not the future. Tell him he needs to start thinking about the future, if he doesn't see it that way maybe you should think about your relationship with him. He may want you to quite your studies. He may feel like less of a person if you become more educated then he is. That would be a control issue, not a good thing.

Being that the rent is based on your income Is your boyfriend living there legally? That is another issue to consider.

can you discuss these issues with your parents to find a solution.talk to him about it . who will take care of the baby,i assume he is the father. if both of you work ,again who takes care of the baby.some one needs to grow up here and realise when your a family there is no [i] you are a team .

Honestly, if I were in your position, I wouldn't work. NO, I don't condone it. NO, I don't agree with it, but I know what it's like to have an infant son, and have to work two jobs to support all debts and housing. You're never home with your child, and you miss so much. You're in school and trying to do better for yourself. We all need help here and there, BUT DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEM. When you finish school, get out and be independent. For now, with prices soaring on everything, I'd try to save up as much money a I could for when I was ready to get a home.

Sally
I think you make a persuasive arguement, but are still quite a selfish person.

Your boyfriend is doing all this work to support you and your child, who I'm sure he would also like to spend time with if he had a free minute.

If he feels that he doesn't want to pay to support you fully, then maybe you should look at getting a job rather than relying on him to keep funding you and your child through life.

You don't have to work full time, and it doesn't need to be particularly taxing. I don't think I know a single student who didn't work while studying full time, and they all still passed their exams. Maybe if you make the effort he'll stop feeling the pressure.

maybe you should work part time just to help
it doesn't hurt to sacrifice a lit bit of yourself in a relationship

so_cali_hottie
You can also make the point that paying a babysitter would eat up more than half of what you earn, plus, the added income would increase your rent. I think you are doing the right thing. Maybe you can browse yard sales on the weekends and sell the stuff on ebay for exra income. That is something you can do on your own time and still have time for your child.

Are you saying you are getting benefits when you are capable to working? maybe that's why he wants you to work..maybe he does not believe in freeloading. Maybe I am reading this question wrong. If you are choosing to stay home and not work..why should you be getting benefits? If you have money to pay a baby sitter and go to school, then you have no right to not work and get benefits.

Pirate Queen
You're right,it doesn't make sense for you to work.I mean, its not like you're just sitting around doing nothing, you're going to school and takin care of the baby.I think thats a full time job right there. If you're not hurting for money then keep doing what you doin and try and talk some sense into ur boyfriend.

i think u should get rid of him problem solved. He is probably cheating any ways. Why else would he want u to work for
