My girlfriend and i broke up. she owns the house. how long do i legally have to move out?

Expert Realtor
30 days is all she has to give you. You are not married so you have no special rights. It's like any other month-to-month landlord/tenant arrangement.

If she changes the locks on you, call the police...she can't, by law, leave you out in the cold no matter how upset she gets.

In all due respect to my previous posters, unless you have an arrangement that is DIFFERENT, you get 30 days minimum, bottom line, regardless of what anyone else tells you. That is the statutory minimum. If you want to get technical about it, if you don't want to leave, she has to evict you like anyone else.

Once you broke up, you legally became a border.

Untill she calls a police officer to throw you out.

It depends on which state you live in... I went through it already I had to file eviction with the courts...Oh and it also depends on how long you have lived there and do you have any proof of you living there.. Good luck

ok, you broke up, what do you not understand

move out now!!!!!!

mustangamer
I would say 24 hours, unless you have special circumstances.

Craig T
I say legally you are on thin ground. Depending on your state and other circumstances could be as little as right now (although I am certain she would have to allow some time for you to remove your stuff) to 30 days. Either way not long

Just move out, why would you want to stay?Looser!

How fast can you say "restraining order"

If you have nothing in writing, I think you have only as long as she is willing to let you stay.

If you do have something in writing, or your name is on the deed (and you would not be asking this question if it was) then pay attention to that.

If you are not a renter, and can prove it, you will get about 10 minutes when the cops show up. Sorry.
If you pay rent then you have 30 days. If you are broken up why would you want to stay there?

Wow good question. 30 Days I think. She has to give you an eviction notice though. But really, since she owns the house that means she probably will be paying the mortgage. So out of respect I would leave now. If you stay it will probably become an uncomfortable situation for the both of you.
