My grandmother's care home has asked for top-up fees. What are my rights?
The local authority have refused to pay the increase requested by the care home. The owners are now trying to pass on this increase to the family in the form of top-up fees. We have previously paid nothing towards her care.
I have heard of this happening to someone but I don't know how it was resolved

Pretty sure the law has changed on this and care fees have to be covered by LA if the person has no income or savings. Re-contact your LA as a matter of urgency. Would also suggest you google it - you may find this on some discussion board somewhere - maybe moneysavingexpert - Martin Lewis. Don't submit to threats from care home, push your LA and do your own homework on the law governing top up fees. Best of Luck.

Your rights are limited to finding a different facility in which your grandmother can reside. The care facility in which she resides has complete authority to raise monthly fees as it sees fit. That the local authority refuses to pay such increases is irrelevant. There is NO 'free ride'. You simply need to shop around with other faciltiies. Will the facilities be as nice as where she currently resides ? No guarantee, since you do not seem to want to pay any increase where she currently resides.
