If you don't have to move immediately, don't worry about the current value. Real Estate is always an ebb and flow marketplace. What goes down, must come back up! Ride it out!
If you must move for other reasons and you are experiencing financial hardship, you can talk to your bank about a short sale. You will still be responsible for paying back the shortfall, in most cases.
Better to stay put if you can though. |

Not unless you were somehow cheated by the lender. Just because your house went down doesn't mean you don't owe money you borrowed. Hopefully you like living there and can afford the payments until the market comes back in a few years. If you lose the house in foreclosure, you may not qualify for another loan for a very long time. |

Sorry, but the only way out is either stay in the house and wait for real estate values to bounce back or default on the mortgage by either a short sale or foreclosure, both of which will hurt your credit.
If you don't have to move, then just wait out the economy. |

FILE BANKRUPTCY and don't listen to people telling you "the market will pick up". It should take another 2 years to clear the mortgage debacle since there's still a backlog of properties that are piling up like yours. IF the market bottoms in 2011 or 2012, it still has to turn upward. Then you'll be lucky to see 5% appreciation each year from that point. Maybe 10 years later, you'll have a property worth what you have TODAY. Still upside down. |
