cutely | My husband is due to retire in June....? |
...He is a very physically active person, and very sociable and friendly.....
We are both concerned that he will miss doing "something" (even though there are about a thousand projects he could finish around here!), and he is toying with the idea of becoming a "handy man".
He is very good at fixing things around the home - drywalling, siding, small plumbing problems, painting, putting up shelves, putting in extra electrical outlets, etc.
He put in a whole new kitchen and bathroom in our house, basically by himself.
Personally, I don't know what I'd do without him. I don't even know how to put up curtain rods!
If I didn't have him around, I'd have to hire someone to do the smallest thing, and I think there are lots of other older people out there who would be glad to have someone around to do small jobs.
This seems like a good idea to me. What do you think?
How would he go about getting the word out?
Thanks for all suggestions! |

Your husband could very well be successful, if he does good work like you describe.
Start by spreading the word among your friends and neighbors, maybe your church if you fo to one, or your bingo group, or your community center.
maybe go to a senior home and ask if they have work, and charge them a very reasonable s=amount so that they will call upon him for repeat business.
Do note that for some types of work he has to get a license - electrical, and plumbing work, for example. |

Great idea! Happy retirement. In my local newspaper in the classified section I've seen several handyman that list themselves. The one that caught my eye is the one that states "no job to small"
I say that because like you I can't even hang a curtain rod. |

I needed a handy made a while ago. The first thing I did was look in the newspaper. There were a number of ads there, and I called the one who said something like, "no job too big or too small". He came over and did a wonderful job. He also had business cards that were very oversized. I put one on the side of my fridge, and called him whenever I needed someone. He was a retired gentleman who wanted something to fill his time. |

Hi Kar....
Opening a 'handyman' business is a wonderful idea. So many men get depressed after retiring because they no longer feel needed. It' realy a BIG adjustment once the excitement wears off.
AND...having a husband home and under foot 24/7 is not too great, either...LOL...trust me <:O)
Jack's been retired for a few years now...and enjoys having the extra time to manage a bowling league and promote it. He also works part time with a buddy of his doing home removations.
As for promoting his new business...one thing that I did when I opened my new business was to put a FREE ad in the paper. Most news papers have a 'new business' announcement feature.
He could pass out flyers around the neighborhood, leave business cards at the local lumber yard and hardware stores...plumbing suppliers...even local fast food restaurants, pharmacies. Some smaller grocery stores have a 'bulletin board'...and don't forget the 'Senior Center'..many elderly need small repairs done.
He could post a 'coupon' there for $5.00 or $10.00 off any repair over $50.00.
Once he gets a few jobs under his belt...he should have the satisfied customers write him a 'letter of recommendation'. It's a great thing to be able to show prospective customers.
The only problem I could foresee would not being 'licensed and insured'. That would be something to look into before he enters homes of strangers. You don't want him held liable for damage or theft...people can be weird <:O) |
