Singer | My landlady's real estate agent has an extra key to the place I'm renting? |
I just moved in to a great place. My land lady told me today that her real estate agent has just forgotten to give her back an extra key to the place I'm staying in. I'm hoping the key will be returned soon. Is this a security issue, or should I just relax and wait for the key to be returned without interfering by calling the real estate agent myself and kindly reminding her to return the key. |

Don't sweat it just let the land lady handle it. You know (sorry to scare you here) all the agent would have to do is go to any hardware store and they could make themselves a permanent copy of the key, but agents don't do this (like once in 10 million but thats the one you hear about on the news) so its not a big deal. If you are really worried about it I'm sure your land lady would let you change the lock so long as you gave her a copy of the new key, for security sake. |

If the real estate agent is with a qualified company I would not worry about it too much. Just be sure you know the agent's name, maybe get a card.
If you are worried you can change the locks or add a deadbolt key. |

if you do decide to change the locks, or add a deadbolt, be sure to give the landlady a key. |

If it isn't returned ask the landlord to change the locks. |

Let the landlord handle it. It is normal for a real estate agent to have a key to show the place. She'll return it. |

This is a serious security issue. You need to politely ask the landlady to see that the extra key is returned immediately, or else that she change the locks. She will understand and do one or the other.
You alone are responsible for your own safety. |

I would make a friendly call just as a reminder. If you are really feeling uneasy, you are allowed to change the lock set and deduct it from the rent if the key is not returned in a specified time. |

I would not mention it again. Instead, I would go out this afternoon and have the locks re-keyed or replaced. The cost is nominal and it's worth the peace of mind to know you are secure. Although there is normally no reason to suspect the realtor to be untrustworthy, you also have no assurance that the previous renters, someone else in the realtor's office, or any number of other persons haven't made duplicate keys and now have access. You should make a key for the landlord, and explain to her your security concerns, and I'm sure that will solve the issue and you can rest easier. Also, make sure you have a second deadbolt lock that can only be locked and unlocked from inside, as a further security for when you are home. |
