get on craigslist immediatly and find a new place to live! most of the people advertising are looking for roomates or are private homeowners who would not ask for a credit check or large deposit. Also, if you can stand it, look into trailer parks, they often rent. I lived in a rather nice one for a year as I prefer a trailor to an apartment. I can't stand the thought of my walls being connected to a strangers and there I had my own yard and something that felt like mine... but I hate apartments!!! |

I had a landlord like that one time and I called the inspectors out to look at the apartment and make him fix a couple of problems and he didn't kick me out; he just whined at me for doing it unnecessarily because of course he was "going to get around to it." Which of course is a stupid excuse if it's freezing outside and you have no heat. People like this have to settle for the tenants they can get, much like you feel you have to settle for the landlord you can get right now.
Although it might not be a bad idea to go month to month on your lease and start looking for a new place at your leisure. I'm sure even if the rental authorities crack down and make him do a few things, they can never take the "slum" out of the "slumlord." |

You can go to the source of the split in the line and remove their tap into you line. You can then sue them for back charges on your phone bill.
If you're renting sans lease then it's illegal and the landlord could get into trouble. He could kick you out or raise your rent because you have nothing in writing to protect you.
Also, rental properties need certain temperature ranges so you should call your local renters rights association (or whatever it's called in your area).
Smoke alarms should be installed in rental properties. Tell the landlord that he must put them in or call the local fire station as sometimes they'll do it for you.
Not sure about the one way out of house. I see upper apartments all the time with only one egress. Once again, check with your renters rights association. |

Caught off the house phone and get a cell phone. Start looking for a place to move. Little by little. If you want to stay there. Caught off the house phone and use your cell phone. buy some home alarms if you feel you want to stay. |

Have the telephone service provider come in on the pretense of 'line faults'. They should be able to see if an extra line is running from yours. If this is the case...request for the service to be disconnected and have a new line put in. That way you can blame the telephone service provider when or if your landlord asks. |

The telephone problem can be easily remedied. Notify your service provider (from any telephone but your own) you want an auxiliary line for the line you are using with a different number. When the service is installed only use the auxiliary number. By law your landlord MUST provide you with a written lease agreement. Verbal contracts are not acceptable for rental agreements. I hope this has been helpful. God bless and good luck!! |

Check into your local squatters rights. Also it is against the law to have no heat whether the lease is verbal or written. You need to make copies of all of the checks that you've been giving him and you need to call the phone company and cancel your service. You can get prepaid cell phones and use those as your home phone. You don't need credit for that. If you have anything in writing from him you need to get it! I would collect all of this and make copies. Give him the copies and tell him that if he doesn't straighten up that you are going to take him to court. Also, if you can, get him to give you a lease agreement. If they are stealing phone service and listening to your calls then chances are that they are going to do other things as well! I would start looking for another person with a house to rent that will accept dogs and tell them that you will give them a large deposit. Also, I would, from now on, sign a lease agreement whenever you move in anywhere! Also, call the local fire dept. about the smoke alarm thing. Good luck and I would get out and fast! |

You can deduct rent for them "sharing" your phone or you can call the health board/ inspector.
Since you have bad credit, animals and not much else... you need to sit and talk w/ them. Is electric included? If it is, then buy electric heaters then give him the reciepts since there is "no heat". He will turn it on so he doesn't have to pay the electric bill. |

You REALLY need to say something to them. and definitely turn them in. if they kick you out then you will have a hell of a lawsuit on their butts! im sorry about your situation. you should feel comfortable at home, not on the edge all the time. do what ya gotta do! if the place isnt in top working order, they cant even accept a payment from you as rent. look that up in your local laws... |

You are going to call me heartless, but what the heck here is my honest advice.
take your pets to Animal Shelter or best sell them yourself. Having a pet is a huge expense while you have bad credit and little money, I wonder why you are wasting money on animals, just because the media and books have make us believe that we should have pets?
Save all the money that you would have spent on Pet Food/Care which by very liberal estimate should be around $200 to $300. Times 12 = $2400 to $3600 year in savings.
Build-up your life you are young, and there will be many opportunities to live the life you like to live, but you must sacrifice for now if you want a better life.
Good Luck! |

Well that is considered illegal phone tapping if you have an account with the phone company and your name is on the bill and you are paying it and the landlords name is not on the bill or living in the same house with you. Now if your all on the same phone line ran through the whole house then they are not stealing anything at all just using the phone that you have activated in your name because the line is the same one but that too is very shady.
Call the phone company to check your lines and make sure they are separate and then talk to the authorities because it is very illegal for them to listen in to your conversations. You have rights as a tenant and may want to contact a renters bureau or someone who is a lawyer who handles rent cases and disputes that represents the tenants. |

if you do not want problems because of how hard it is to fine a new place, then best bet is to cancel the land line and go cell |

Insist that if they are going to continue using it, then they need to help pay for it, or call the phone company and tell them. Also, contact your fair housing agency in your area, the way you are living is not fair to you. Even with bad credit, you have options open to you and don't need to settle for unhealthy and unfair living conditions. |
