My landlord is asking about a frequent visitor...?
I do not have many friends, which is how I prefer to live. I am always with my boyfriend and we are usually with our two close friends.

I rent a basement apartment, so there's a chunk of my income right there. Having to pay rent has made me learn to save money by staying in most nights. My boyfriend and I will usually get a movie or make some food and hang out. Normal typical things. We are quiet coming into the apartment, when we leave, even when were are inside. When the four of us are at my place were quiet. So I know noise isn't an issue.

My landlord seems to have a problem with this regardless. Im nervous because it's hard to find a good place to live, and especially someplace that i can afford. They are in their 50s-60s, the man has MS (so he is home 24/7) and the woman works less than part time. My landlord asks why "the same boy is always here".

My question is can my landlord raise my rent or even kick me out because Im paying them for that space choose to be there with my boyfriend frequently? Because that seems to be her intent when she'll these questions. I've even caught her yelling at my boyfriend when he was making a phone call. (I only have the cell phones and dont get service in the basement). This was in the early afternoon and my boyfriend was even walking off the property (the side of the house) to the street before even dialing!!

I know I pretty much just ranted but as a tenant in an illegal apartment am I wrong? I didn't sign any lease or contract with these people. Where should I go from here and how should I handle this situation?

If you don't have a contract, I'm pretty sure she can kick you out or raise your rent whenever she wants to.

Your crabby landlord's are being intrusive, with questions like that. You need to only tell them that the boyfriend does not live there. They're probably concerned that he's showering there, or doing laundry - which would indeed add to their water bill. Myself? I'd bake the landlords a batch of brownies and do my best to reassure them and smooth things over - even though they appear to be in the wrong here. Next time, at least ry to get a rental agreement, eh? Good luck

sounds like you are renting the basement of someones home, not a regular apt. Even though you have the same rights as any other renter, living in someones home requires a little more respect and communication. Try to sit down and discuss what they are uncomfortable with and what you need to be happy living there. When someone rents part of their home, they usually need the money so it would be in both your interest to work it out. If you cant, use the time to search for something better...

Ask him "would you prefer it was a different boy each night" ? Tell him you have done nothing wrong and are allowed to have visitors. He can't kick you out or raise your rent for having someone there.

Gertie
Sounds like they are crabby people. Tell her he's your boyfriend and he comes over to watch movies with you. Does she expect you to not have friends over at all.

I personally don't care what my tenant does as long as she pays me the rent every month I'm good to go. Wish there was more Landlords like myself.

Without getting too deep into this. Does your BF sleep over regularly? If so the landlord has a point. If the agreement, verbal or otherwise was for you to be the sole resident that is what is expected. If two people are resident he is entitled to charge more rent. Whether you like it or not, that is how it works. If your BF visits you during the day, even every day, he is a visitor, not resident. You are entitled to have as many visitors as you wish so long as they don't cause problems.

Move, they are old and think young people hanging out having sex and doing drugs. Simple as that. Save now start looking around or move back home for a month or two to save money. You have to leave to be in peace, I can see that you are miserable, and I don't know you.

They sound a bit nosey! But...If you had a written lease agreement it usually has something in there about guests. Without a lease agreement it's kind of open for interpretation. I don't think you are out of line. Instead of being offended possibly open up the lines of communication. Introduce your boyfriend and friends to them. Without a written lease they can raise rent, give you notice...I would suggest doing a written lease so all parties are protected.

They are there afternoons and evenings, too? Some landlords tend to get antsy about an apartment being a hang-out, even to a small group of quiet people. If no one spends the night and everyone leaves at 9:30ish and is quiet I tend to think they are a bit jealous (I would be :-P).

Simply be friendly and cordial with them so they can see you aren't a hooker or something and try to cut the visits down a bit for a while.

They are concerned about an additional person moving in. He's over at your place all the time, and they wonder if he's planning to move in -- or already has.

Go to your boyfriend's once in a while. The other couple should invite you two over for supper & a video instead of you doing all the entertaining -- and the work involved in that. Take turns instead of hanging out at your place all the time.

Your landlord will find something better to do if you aren't there all the time to bug, too. Since you don't have a lease, just be cool and let them chill.

KC<3
if he is living there all the time then they can do something but if he is there sometimes and using your cell phone they cant do anything-you should probably have a lease or contract with theses people

Cheryl A
When you have month to month tenancy, they can terminate for any reason (so can you, for that matter) as long as you give 30-days notice (in writing).

I really have to agree with the other posters. Your landlords sound like busybodies who have nothing better to do than poke and prod into your life. Either make friends with them so they stop picking at you, or find a new place to live!

Good luck to you!

It sounds to me like it's always going to be something with these people. Look for another place. In the end these people will drive you nuts.

yes your landlord can do ask you to leave anytime he wants, i'm sure that says in the enw age rental agreements..

You would find very few landlords who would tolerate the frequent visits by the boyfriend, in INDIA...

it would be a better idea, if you help your landlords,a s they are old, you could ask you boyfrend to pick up stuff for them, some help in picking up grocery bags... and always say unlce you are very smart and Aunty you are so kind, Aunty you must be a great cook... this could keep them happy... and really old people want some love from others.. if you can be just nice to them and act like they are your elders. they would be nice to you too...

Otherwise the house is theirs to use as they like...
