My landlord lost my check? He wants another one?
I hand delivered my monthly check at end of last month directly to my landlord. Now he tells me he lost it somewhere & wants me to write another check in the same amount. I went to the bank & teller told me nobody cashed it. What to do? We have no idea where my check is. What would you do?

It's bad that your landlord lost your check and actually admitted to you that he/she lost it.

I would get it in writing that the landlord must pay you what your bank charges for "stop payment" on that check number so that it doesn't accidentally get fraudulently used (in case it was carelessly thrown in the trash or blew away in the wind)...

This isn't your problem, it's your landlords for losing the check. So, don't write another one until they pay for the "stop payment" you will have to pay the bank in order for that check to be null and void.

Get your landlord to cover any fees associated with cancelling the first check, cancel it and write him a new one. Whatever you do don't write another one until the first one is cancelled.

give him another check but make him pay the canceled check fee for the other check

Matias B
place a stop payment and write another, but they cost 20-30 so have the landlord deduct the stop payment fee out of the rent.

I would call the bank and void that check to make sure it doesn't clear anywhere. If they can guarantee that, then write him another, no biggy. good luck

Go to the bank cancel the first one. Then write him a new one!

Tim H
Call the bank and cancel the check you already wrote. If there is a fee for this take it off the amount you owe your landlord for rent. Then write him a new check. People make mistakes so it is understandable if he lost your check. Your landlord is definitely someone you want to have a good relationship with so give him his money even if it isn't your fault he doesn't already have it.

Have your bank cancel that check and write another ... not much else you can do. Pretty sorry landlord, that's for sure. See if your landlord will pay for the cancelation fee and don't even let him try to charge you a late fee.

Mr. Goodkat
cancel the payment on the one you wrote and give him a new one.

Charlie Bucket
you can stop payment on the check, but my bank charges 20$.

i would ask your landlord to cover that cost-it's not your fault or responsibility that he lost the check.

Property Manager
Whats the big deal? Mistakes happen. Write another check and put a stop payment on the 1st one. Your landlord should pay for the stop payment fee.

estielmo
Tell him he will have to pay the Stop Payment charge if he wants you to re-issue a lost check.

psychorabbit15
Write that the check is voided out on your book, make sure the bank knows. I'd suggest a stop payment, but those usually cost 25 dollars or so. (I think your landlord should be responsible for this charge.)

Check with your bank to see if there's any way to flag that check number, in case someone tries to cash it. There shouldn't be much of a problem, writing another check, and avoiding any fraud from the last check.

The best thing to do is to void the lost check at the bank, and the landlord has to pay for that (normally the bank charges between 15-20 $ for the cancellation) and after you can write a new check. But be sure the first one is void and have the receipt...

Suzanne
make sure you put a stop payment on the 'lost' check... then just write another one out to your landlord and again, make sure you hand deliver it to him so no more excuses.

also, if there is a stop payment fee, tell your landlord he should pay for it since he did lose the check...

winnie
Stop payment on the 1st check and give him another, I guess. Kinda sucks having your account info out there. You'll want to keep a close eye on your account for awhile. Or, if you're a little paranoid and/or extra-super careful, you could close your account and open a new one. Good luck!

Leslie
Put a stop payment on the check that was lost and if there are any fees from your bank for doing that then have the landlord pay the fee or take the fee out of the new check you write.
