What kind of weather are you having? Does the landlord have a date when the heat is turned on? It really depends on your current temps. You may think it's cold and want the heat but the other folks in the building may think 68 is perfectly comfortable.
If the temp in your place has gotten down in the 50s, it's reasonable for you to demand heat. Contact your local housing authority to complain. |

Google “landlord laws” + [your state]. There are usually specific regulations about when they’re legally required to turn on the heat.
If your landlord is violating the law, first point it out to him/her and ask them to comply. If that doesn’t work, call your local HUD office (www.hud.gov) for advice.
If your landlord isn’t violating the law, put on extra layers and put an extra blanket on the bed. You might just be uncomfortable at a temp higher that the one at which the heat must be turned on. |

tell him if he forces you back to the stone age of having no heating, you will do what people in the stone age did.... build a fire in the middle of the room. Cavemen didn't have to worry about heating or thier burnt carpets and soot covered ceilings so why should you.
short of that, buy an electric heater or find the thermostat yourself and turn it on. Its a legal requirement for the landlord to make it possible to keep a rented property at a contstant habitable heat. |

Put your rent in an escrow account for the rent and tell him you won't be taking it out of the escrow account until the heat is turned on. That way in court you have shown that you have provided funds for the rent (i.e., proof of "good faith") and your landlord is not operating in "good faith". I also suggest that you move - if your landlord is this much of a jerk, you shouldn't be enriching their lives. I am assuming that you are in the United States - I don't know what the rules are outside of the U.S. |
