My neighbor yelled at me for selling my house so cheap? Who is right?
So I have a neighbors who are selling their houses in Southern Cal (ventura county). One is asking 840K and the other is asking 780K. Both have been on the market for over 200 days and they did not get an offer. My wife and I decided to sell ours across the street for 625K (our list price was 700K). My neighbor sees me and instead of congratulating us, he said some really offensive things to us. I told him to consider reducing if he wants to sell and to be realistic. Then he flips me off and goes into his house. That was the end of it. Did I hurt them, or was I doing the right thing? I was looking out for my family...

Don't feel alone as this is happening everywhere. The real problem is they overpaid for their homes and want to get the money they paid back. This of course is not going to happen do to the overpriced market. You did what was right for yourself and your family.....I say good for you on your wise choice as I feel the prices will drop even lower. Now take your money and find something that you know is not overpriced and will bring much happiness to you and your family. The best of luck....Palin

Go tell him to take a running leap off the pier.

If you're not close to the pier, tell him to pound sand.

It's your property. You can sell it for what you want.

You sold your home for what you can get in this pathetic market. Your neighbor's problem is that he just got a dose of reality, and he can't handle it.

bigtalltom
you have to look out for your family, so I don't think you did the wrong thing at all.

He's mad because he thinks it will drive down the value of his house (which it will) but that's too bad for him. That's just market economics.

Vapor Trails
You did the right thing! It is absolutley none of their business how much you sold it for! Sometimes you just have to worry about yourself and your family. Be glad your getting away from such horrible people!

As long as you got what you needed from the sale of your house, why be bothered? He probably is now concerned that he won't get his higher asking price because there are records kept of house selling prices that potential buyers for areas can access. Don't take his behavior personally.

Market Value is whatever a seller is willing to sell their house for and whatever a buyer is willing to pay. Too many sellers are listing their homes for way too much. What happens is their homes sit on the market and they help sell their neighbors homes that are more reasonably priced.

You did just fine. Your neighbor has an unrealistic idea of what his house is worth in a declining market

This is going to sound so "Brady Bunch" like, but...

What your neighbor did says more about him than about you.

And what it says about your neighbor is that he paid too much for a home he could barely afford and is feeling the pressure of nobody wanting to bail him out.

You did what was best for your situation.
Your neighbor was just mad because you sold first and the lower price will hurt the values in the area. I believe you did the right thing in today's market. If there were homes for sale in your neighborhood and you were able to price yours lower that in my mind is why the buyers picked yours over the higher priced homes. Its very possible if your neighbor would have priced his home a little less it may have sold and he would have saved 7 months of house payments.

It is none of their business what you do with your home and your finances.

You should be glad to be leaving, he sounds like a piece of work.

I have the exact opposite, my idiot neighbor bought his house for WAY too much money and now the city says my house is work $30,000 MORE than what I paid for it 3 years ago because of what he paid. Although I think he is an overeducated idiot, I never said it to him and wouldn't think of being a rude a**hole, but apparently your neighbor wasn't raised very well.

Those neighbors are listed 150k over market value and have the nerve to flip you off when you sell for a fair market value in this down market. Pigs get fed but hogs go to the slaughter!!!! God helps those who help themselves!!!
You have all the right to sell your home for 10 dollars if you so choose to its your property and your right. If you made good profits then forgetabout them. I think its pretty nasty on there part to mess with you and flip you off they are all probably desperate and are in over there heads and made bad decisions buying there homes at the peak of trhe market.
They couldn't afford there homes and now you should wait to sell your home for more. They need to wake up and smell the roses cause they are in denial thinking they will get 150k over market value.
I'm glad you got your price and you deserve profits for taking them off the table. Congratulations!!! will come from your family here on Yahoo instead. Your neighbors are going to be stuck there or be in foreclosure soon is my best guess if they don't get realistic. This speculation on there part caught them and will be a valuable lesson even if they haven't figured it out yet. Funny how grown people blame others for there own problems. Good to hear a you profited and I hope you can get a bargain when you buy too! The fact that you felt bad about this shows me not a nicer person then you probably deserves the profits you made. Now have a grand time with the money you made for your family!!:)

if you are satisfied with the deal and still came out ahead, don't sweat what the neighbors think. there is a reason their homes have been on the market so long - overpriced.

The price you sold for is the price you sold for. If your neighbor feels that his home is worth higher, then he should stay. 200 hundred + days on market is an indicator that maybe his asking price is too high. Price is what a buyer is willing to pay and what a seller is willing to sell for.

Try this thought.

Your neighbor can choose a price that will:

A - Generate no offers (which means it’s too high)
B - Generate one offer (Priced at current market value)
C - Generate multiple offers (Priced below market value)

Ask him which of the 3 he thinks his price is. The facts will reveal what he should do.

The only way that you have affected your neighbors was that your home sale will reflect in their appraisal when they finally sell. Does it decrease the overall value? Yes. But so does all the foreclosures in the area. He should not blame you for the market; it’s not your fault. You and your family adapted to the changing market and sold your home. He will get his 800000 price one day, just not soon. He will have to wait till the market returns. Real Estate has ups and downs. We will soon have an upswing and he will be a happy camper again. So, don't worry about them. You are in the right.

Well I think that you did the right thing. I think that he may be upset that you sold yours quicker than he did his and this is why he is so upset. That is his issue not yours. I mean maybe you don't owe as much as he did and so you were able to sell at a lower price and have good proceeds and maybe he is not able to do that. Once it comes down to it, it's his own damn fault, I mean everyone within the US knows the market that we are in and if you are really needing or wanting to sell your home, you know and I'm sure he knows as well what it is going to take. Trust me, I have 2 neighbors right now that both have their property on the market also, they are both asking $250.K for theirs, but we less then a month ago put our home on the market for $200.K and had mulitple offers in less than 3 days and are now selling also with great proceeds. I mean you need to know the market, and some of us are smarter than others.

your droping the price of the houses around there your wrecking there listing prices.. dont you get! it im mad now to

Expert Realtor
This is what I noticed by your post:

No where do you do say where you got a PROFESSIONAL to evaluate your market conditions to find out WHY homes are not selling in your neighborhood and why he/she would think your home would or would not sell.

I saw once a woman that lived in a house for 20 years, put her house on the market $240,000 UNDER value because she had no idea of what it was worth....and found out after it sold in 6 hours after being on the market.

Don't shoot youself in the leg...and don't assume the PRICE is what sells a home....what condition is their home in? What colors do they use in their decor? Do they have the home on MLS or are they trying to sell it FSBO which REDUCES their chances in selling it by 95%? Can a Realtor come by anytime they want or do they have to wait for these people to get off work?

ALL OF THESE FACTORS are important!!!!

I'm glad you can easily afford to flush $75K down the toilet....the market is down, but NOT everywhere and in every neighborhood.
