Mary B, I'd give you a hundred thumbs up if I could.

If you think she is going to be any more reliable in paying what is then in YOUR name and credit, dream on.

Call the utility and make an arrangement for her to just pay a little each month to the arrearages as long as she pays on time and keep your name off of it. YES, they WILL make such an arrangement.

This would not happen where I live. People try and commit fraud against the power and other companies all of the time. The only way the power company will let the new tenant have service is if the landlord pays any past due. This is one reason landlords have time to return deposits, so they can make sure their new tenant can have power/water and garbage service.

Tell your "girlfriend" (you picked a winner there bud!) to take care of her kids and pay her bills. She is neglecting her children and if she does not care for them enough to pay the bill ethically you should help those poor kids and call Child Protective Services. Neglected children will be cared for by the state if neither of their parents are capable.

Chances are they won't allow it, because utility companies are "onto" people just transferring the utility from one name to another in the same household.

I would suggest that she go to social services and apply for emergency relief.

If she can afford INTERNET SERVICE, then she has a major problem in establishing priorities as far as what is necessary for her children to live safely.

I can't imagine paying for internet service knowing my children are freezing.

Doesn't sound like too good of a mother to me.

You can try, but it depends on the gas company and if the landlord is willing to lie.

I had a tenant get shut off for non-payment. She attempted to first put the heat in one of her children's name (different last name) and then her brother's name (same last name). The gas company wanted verification from me that she had in fact moved out. I refused to lie.

She ended up evicted shortly thereafter. Failure to keep the gas service was in breach of her lease, the lack of heat left my property exposed to the potential for frozen pipes and was a health code violation.

I believe you can as long as you don't mention her and her late payments. Just advise you're a new tenant. It's possible they'll ask for a deposit depending on your credit but you shouldn't have any problems getting it on in your name. Just be careful because if she doesn't pay it will affect you negatively and you'll be responsible for any amount that might be sent to collections.

Yes, but they may require you to pay off the other account first.

yes! I did the same thing for a friend once and I just called ans had it turned on! I did have to tell a white lie that I just moved in and wanted to turn the heat on! hope everything goes well.

I am pretty sure that you can't. But it all depends on if she is renting or if she owns the place. But most of the time, you would have to prove that YOU now live there, and the former occupants are gone. That would be the only way you could have the gas in your name, especially since she already has an account with them.

Ken
If it is very cold where you are, contact the gas company immediately. They all have programs to get you heat in the winter. If she owes back utilities they will not turn on the gas without some verification that she is no longer there. There are agencies that will help you with your utility bills if you cannot afford them. If she really cannot afford her bill, she needs to contact the gas company. Tell them her situation and they will either provide her with financial assistance or put her on a payment plan so that she can repay the amount plus current bills when they come due.

I hope it isn't as cold there as it is here, best of luck to you.

(Not so) angry Charlie
I did it. How do they know she didn't move out.
