Oh my God...how do I make it end? How can I warn others?
I've been here before...asking how to get rid of a person renting a room in my house. Well...she's finally gone, well...*she* and her subletter is gone, all of her possessions are gone, but she keeps coming back! Yeah, I know. Get a restraining order. Problem is, they're not really effective. This parasite moved around the corner! They're harassing me over some mirror she actually gave to me 6 months ago, stealing my mail, watching my house, trying to break in - the messed up thing? The police won't do a thing. Why? Because they still consider her living here. The police say that's still her mirror even though it's been hanging on my wall for 6 months. Do I even want it? No. But the nerve of her demanding it back has pissed me off. After everything she's stolen from me and my invalid mother, she don't need to have it. Why should she have something she wants when she's stolen me blind of things *I* wanted that were mine long before she ever got here? She's stopping my mailman up the street and getting my mail -cops won't do anything. She's coming to my door threatening me - cops wont do anything. She's watching my house, running up to people who come here looking to rent the room she moved out of, scaring them off with lies. Shes out on the public street, so shes technically not on my property - the cops wont do anything. They're trying to break in at night, peering through my windows. I can see her letting my dog out, playing with him to get teeth marks on her arm to get him taken away from me...she's already threatened to call animal services on me. She just won't go away. She's a vindictive, dangerous person and in this situation, a restraining order isn't going to be worth a damned. Shes already running from the law with an active warrant out on her for non payment of child support. Lovely woman, right? But I've called the cops on her repeatedly and they won't even arrest her. So what do you do to protect yourself when they have moved out but still keep coming back harassing and threatening and the police won't lift a finger against her? When she moved right around the corner and will be in and out before cops ever get her anyway? I mean, who sticks around waiting for cops to get them on a restraining order after they've committed a crime? Is there ANY recourse?

I live in Contra Costa County, California.

take the mirror to her.

if she returns, hire a HS football player to visit her and suggest that she
ignore your existence. PERIOD.

if she does not, it is time for you to TRADE your home for one further away............

I can help with that

sorry about her actions.
[i have lived in CC County too]

The first thing I'd do would be to give her the mirror- you're trying your hardest to get her to understand what Leave Me the Fxxk Alone means, but the whole time this mirror remains as a connection between you and her. Basically what it's doing is blurring the clarity of the message you're giving her. You're cutting your nose off to spite face. You don't even want the mirror. I know that doing that essentially means she's won, but who cares? Look at all the stress this is creating for you- is the principle really worth it? The police consider the mirror to be hers- really, what is to stop her calling the police on you, saying you've stolen her mirror? If you give it to her, all tangible connections between you are severed. If she then continues behaving as she is, the police are more likely to take your complaints seriously.

I would also put in a complaint about the police, I don't know what it's called where you are, but in the UK we have the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) for that- for one thing, if the warrant is active, why the hell are they not arresting her for that? In the meantime, keep a diary of everything she does, with the date and the time and what happened, and if anyone else saw, and keep any evidence too.

Do give her the mirror though- I know she's stolen from you and from your mother and that's she's making your life a misery but a mirror isn't adequate recompense for that as I'm sure you realise and as long as you have the thing, she thinks she's got justification for her actions. You've got more over her once you give it back because then she's got no justification at all and keeping it clearly isn't doing the trick. This situation could easily turn really nasty- she knows where you live, she's obviously not interested in playing fairly with anyone and clearly thinks she's above the law (as the arrest warrant proves) so do everything you can to get her out of your life. Your safety is more important than any principle.

Ok, a restraining order, I can tell you now, won't help.

She can be on the public street...they are right about that.

Cops don't issue restraining orders, COURTS do, so you need to go to the courthouse and stand in front of a magistrate to get one issued. You can get one under the grounds of stalking.

I hope you have changed your locks.

Relocate your mail to a post office box or get a new mailbox with a LOCK.

Report the mail theft to the Postmaster...that is a felony.

It sounds like she is getting off getting a rise out of you. If she comes to your door, just don't respond. If she stands out on the street, turn your lights off...if you keep feeding the "drama" it will continue.

If she is supposedly running from the law on a warrant, then call child support services and report her new address because you know where she lives, right?

You could always return the mirror to her...in more than one piece.

Go to the post office and complain that she is stealing your mail. Take her to small claims court to redeem the $500 cash your grannie mailed to you in her last card which this bimbo stole.

Put the mirror somewhere outside where she can get it, and move past it. You make a valid point re having had it for 6 mos, but you're not dealing with a normal person, so your options are few. Rent a post office box and have your mail sent to it. Not the point, again, but clearly the more temptation you remove from her, she's bound to lose interest. Meet potential new tenants at a local coffee shop and walk them home if they fit your profile. She may be less likely to approach you if you and the person are together.
