Brittany | On my own for the first time & need help with housing. If you're successful, please read!!? |
I'm out of college, i'll be 25 this year, and frankly I'm sick of living at home and need my own place. I make ab $450 a week (which is okay money...i live in alabama), but am scared to death to just go sign a lease anywhere! I've looked at several places and my parents are the most discouraging. It makes me sick how they are so negative and tell me I'll never be able to afford places...when the truth is, ive saved $1000s in case i ever really couldnt do it. They are just so negative and it hurts that they tell me i couldnt afford to live on my own. I think i want to just go with an okay apt. thats a little less expensive versus the one i really want (that has the pool, blah blah...) Don't you think this would be better in the long run because I do want to buy a house one day and not throw money away on this. The good news is I lived in my own place in college that my folks paid for so i have every piece of furniture and kitchen equipment and also a washer and a dryer...just please help me....someone who knows what i'm going through. |

Your parents are not negative, they are being realistic. Even if you can find a place to rent for $400 or less, you will be pinching pennies monthly. |

Britt, $450 a week will put you below the poverty line. If you REALLY can't live with your parents, rent the least expensive apartment you can find and keep your credit cards at $0. |

With your income you should be able to do fine in an apartment that is about $450 a month in rent. Be sure you first have at least $2,000 in a short-term emergency fund, and it is ideal to have 4-6 months expenses saved for long-term emergencies such as unemployment, illness, etc. Stay out of debt and do not spend money before you earn it. Perhaps you parents just don't want you to move out, even if they don't realize it, but it is time to be an independent adult. Explain to them that they did a good job raising you into an adult, which was their job. Give it a go for a year, and perhaps you will decide to have a roommate, or even move back home. Sometimes parents are so wrapped up in parenting and their children, that they forget to work on their own marriage. That can be scary for parents. Call them often, and invite them over to your place for dinner. Good luck! |

Well the answer is simple, find a house or apartment that you can afford, I would say, make sure that your total monthly expenses (rent included) don't exceed 40% of your gross monthly income, so put pen to paper. If you can't afford it, get a roommate and cut the cost in half.
Good Luck. |

You make $1800/mo. You shouldn't spend more than 1/3 on rent ($600). Based on the tone in your post, you need to get away from the oppressors ASAP. Find a place for $600 and don't look back. Buy a house in a year when the real depression hits us. http://rentmybudgetrv.com |

You don't say exactly how much you have saved. You will need first, and last month's rent, plus a deposit. You will need deposits on your utilities. You will need to buy, rental insurance, etc.
I'd suggest that yo umake sure that you have 3 to 6 months worth of expenses saved up, then go for it.
You tell us how much you make and that you are looking at a cheap place and an expensive place, but you don't tell us how much those places are.
I'd suggest you try to stay around $500 a month in rent. |
