Do you know your neighbours - or other people in your street?

It could possibly be for them, and the person who sent it got the address wrong.

Ask you next door neighbours and people over the road from you, if they know the person it is addressed too.

How long have you lived in that house, could it be for previous tenants or the owner etc.

If you have tried all reasonable avenues to find the the person and still can't, then just take it back to the PO.

Let's say you live in Ash St - maybe the Ash is also Ash Pde - or Ash Close, or Ash Avenue. etc.

Return to PO and they'll take care of it.

For goodness sake, call the post office and they'll guide you where to look on the package (lookup codes) and if still there's nothing, they'll at least tell you what to do with it.

well, if it was delivered from the post office, didnt you have to at least sign for it ?

is it addressed correctly ?
apart from the name ?
does it have a return address

if its from a courier send it back
if its from the post office taske it back

take it back 2 the post office, if you open it or even keep the parcel the post office people or who ever it belongs yo could track down who is got delivered too and if you never sent it back you may be in a bit of trouble.

miss_chrissy_dawn
Depending on how it was delivered, you can now call the USPS, UPS or FedEx to come retrieve it.

Take it to the Post Office. Youve no right to open it -besides, it may be a bomb - so you definitely dont want to open it!

If it was delivered by the post office you can write "Return to Sender - Addressee Unknown" and either take it to the post office or give it to your mail man.

If it was delivered by UPS or Fedex you can call them and they will come get it.

I wouldn't open it if it's not addressed to you. I don't know about in the UK, but in the US that's a felony, tampering with mail that isn't yours.

In the US you would take it to the post office and tell them that no one by that name lives there, or that it was sent to the wrong place, depending on which it is.

The recipient listed on the box is unknown to you, though it's your address? Peculiar. I'd try attempting to contact the sender to find information on the shipment; you should be able to find most people and just about any company online. If there's no return address or any other information, I'd get a wee bit paranoid, myself, probably contact the shipping company to return to sender, incorrect delivery.

I'm assuming that it IS your address on the box -- sometimes they do deliver to a neighbor if the original recipient isn't at home (though if that's the case, they should have left it on that person's doorstep, not yours). If it ISN'T your address, then contact the shipping company.

If it's not your name on it and you don't have a clue who the listed recipient is, then don't open it. There can be legal issues with opening other people's mail.

honey
If there is a senders address on the back, then I would contact them and explain the situation. Otherwise I would give it back to the postman (or woman) on Monday. Please do not open it, as it is against the law to do so.

Talk to the delivery service...US Postal Service, UPS, etc...and inform them the package was delivered to you by mistake and they will pick it back up and send it back to the original sender.

The police dept does not get involved in such matters.

When i get mail that isn't mine, i leave it out there on the porch for the mailperson to pick up. Or taking it to the post office is a good idea, they can get it shipped to the right address.

ooooo, i think i know what could've happened, hehe: a relative of whomever the package was intended for could've lived in your house before you did. I still get mail addressed to the people that lived in the house before i did, i just put it back in the mailbox for the mailperson to take it, or go to the postoffice.

Could it be for one of your neighbours, with your house number incorrectly used?

Each year I get a birthday card arrive addressed to 1B, my house is 1, there is no 1B - it's actually for someone at no. 10. but the sender always addresses it incorrectly.
