metstark | Paying my rent late because of the holidays? |
We just moved into a new house 2 mths ago and since it is the holidays would rather pay my rent on Jan 3rd instead of the 1st. I do have the money, but it would make it slightly easier to pay it on the 3rd out of my next check. Is this an acceptable request to ask of my new landlord? Or am I risking looking like a bum? Additional Details I give my rent in money order form, there is no lease, and it's not a big rental company but rather a couple that rents the house out next to them. |

All you can do is ask.
The worst that can happen is they say no we want it on the 1st.
I'm guessing they won't have a problem waiting the extra 2 days. |

You should ask them. The mortgage is likely due on the 1st.
Do not assume that because they have a business or a job that they can afford to make their mortgages w/o being paid rent. |

You won't make any points with the landlord, that's for sure. You're telling him/her that there are other things in your life right now than paying the rent. You have only one option - ask the landlord if he will accommodate your request. I personally wouldn't even ask unless I had a very important truthful and verifiable story to tell. And I wouldn't do it just because I'd like to put the money towards gifts and dinners, etc. This isn't a good time to get on their bad side, for it may make them be very inventive in the future in how to replace you with more desirable, responsible tenants. |

looking like a bum to me, pay your rent on time and be responsible |

Generally you have a 5 day grace period, however, it's technically late after the 1st. If your landlord actually makes an issue of this they are idiots! |

You don't have a signed lease? That should be the biggest of your worries. Get a lease in writing now! Your landlords are insane to rent out a unit without a lease, and this situation is exactly the reason why. If it were in writing, you'd know what's allowable - due on the 1st, but not considered late until the 3rd business day or something like that.
Ask your landlord if the 3rd is okay, then ask for a signed lease. |

In my renting experiences, I have always had a 5 day grace period. My rent was due on the 1st but not later than the 5th or you would have penalties. This was through an actual property management company, so seeing how this is just a couple renting out a house, no I don't think it's unreasonable to ask them. Just tell them exactly what you said on here and I'm sure they would understand unless they are that tight for money. |

It sounds okay to me. But be sure to ask
your landlord first, and be SURE to pay
the rent on the 3rd as promised. |

Be honest and upfront with them and let them know you would like to pay two days late and offer to pay the late fee's as well. Most landlords are understanding over a couple days but not more then that make sure you do what you say you will do. |

If you are going to be late the very LEAST you can do is ask them... they probably need the money as bad, if not worse, than you do. |

You can ask if this is OK. All they can say is no, right? |

I think if you let them know they will be fine with it. The holiday are expensive on everyone. |
