jaybeeasks | Question about Income Support/Housing Benefit? |
Hi all,
I'm moving out of my parents place for the first time to a different London Borough to be closer to my work. However, the work might run out in a month or so when we are being taken over.
Being that I am self-employed, am I eligible for Housing Benefit/Income Support if the job ends?
Many thanks all,
JB Additional Details EDIT - would I get benefits if if I keep my registered address as my parents??
I think the credit rating system downgrades you if you chop and change your address.
Thanks so far to Alchemist and 2+3!! |

Housing benefit could be paid if you can show you will lose your home if you cant pay the rent and prove you no longer have income coming in.
Income support gets paid to single parent families, or those unable to work for medical reasons. If you have a partner who works then its very unlikely you will get this, you may get jobseekers allowance. If you have a partner who doesn't work then i still think they refer you to Jobseekers allowance as they want you or your partner to work if medically able to do so.
Check with your local Jobcenter, as i am not 100% sure, but i think that's the rules.
Hope this helps. |

Fill in a form now and you might not be eligible because your working, but still claim in case you are. When your not working if not already claiming, make a claim. Remember though always inform them when your circumstances change. You may find that at the end of the benefit year you may have been paid to much or even better, too little. Its one of those things were you just haver to go with the flow |

If they view you as employable you will have to sign on for JSA. How much NI contributions you have paid will decide what money you get from whom... You get housing benefit and council tax benefit. You might have to wait as long as 3 weeks before you get money though. And probably even longer before the housing benefit gets sorted out. |

When you're self employed benefits are a nightmare.
You'll be claiming job seekers allowance (JSA). If you've paid around 2 years worth of national insurance contributions there's no problem & you get 'Contribution based' JSA If not, you'll have to claim a version of Job Seekers Allowance called 'income based'. For that you'll need to present your last years audited accounts and projections for the coming year.
How easy your claim to housing benefit will be depends which type of job seekers allowance you get. If your JSA is income based you'll sail through the Housing Benefit system and they'll only want proof of your address and identity. If you get Contribution based JSA the housing benefit people will need to see your audited accounts and projections.
Assessing claims from self employed people is really difficult. As such you may find your claim gets continually put to the bottom of the pile. Benefit assessors have to process a certain number of claims per day. A standard claim takes 2 minutes. A self employed claim can take around an hour, so processing clerks often put off doing them.
If you don't have your benefit determinations within 10 days, start ringing every day. |

To be honest,i would stay put until you know exactly what's happening.
When applying for any benefit, you could be told that you knew what the circumstances were, and you could very well be refused any benefits.
If you can provide all proof of being self-employed,and the fact that the company or firm are / have been taken over.
Go and have a word with someone at the job centre / d.w.p and explain the situation, they will be able to advise you on which way to go.
Take all the necessary documents with you. |
