Question about extending an apartment lease.?
Ok. Our lease ends Sept 1. We found a new place already, but it won't be ready to move into until Sept. 14 (I find this weird in itself, never heard of moving in in the middle of the month). How likely is it if I call my rental company that they will let us live in our current apartment for 1 extra month? We have lived here for 5 years and been perfect tenants...no late payments and no complaints about us from anyone as far as I know. I want to call them tomorrow, but am worried what they will say. I really want to move and do not wish to be homeless for 2 weeks in september. Any of you have experience with this?

Thanks for the boost you guys. Landord said no problem to extending the lease for a month, just come in and do some paperwork.

I am a landlord.

If I were in this situation I would have no problem allowing you to stay another month if you called and were willing to pay for it. However, I would probably request that you allowed me to show the home during your final month (which is probably in your contract anyhow).

If I were you, I would be very polite when I called and I would offer before they ask that you would be willing to show the rental unit to potential renters.

It doesn't hurt to try. The answer you get will depend on your landlord. Most leases have a "no holdover" clause which basically means that when your lease is up you have to leave, but some landlords will still work with you to help you out. Explain your situation and ask them if they can do anything to help you out. If not, depending on where you live, you can usually find apartments for short-term or monthly leases so you don't have to be homeless if you decide to move.

Your lease probably already has a clause in it that goes to month to month if either you or your landlord don't give written notification 30 days prior to moving out. If he does terminate your lease at the end of August just ask him if you can extend for one month maybe you can help him out by offering to show the place for a future tenant it could be win win for both of you.

What your landlord might want is a relating fee if I'm not mistaking which is a fee if you want early termination out of your lease. Then to if you been on time for 5years he or she might let you out but i don't think so it's all about the money, money rules it all.Again see if you can pay prorated rent,it want hurt to try.

Good luck, something is going to work for you

Call and put in writing a request to do a month to month rental for the month of September. If landlord has not rerented the apartment they should agree. If the apartment is already rented you may have a problem unless they can get the new tenants to move in later.

I would just ask them if you can just pay for an extra month without extending the contract, tell them the situation if you feel they will not just try and kick you out.

deepti
get over with it ask them at the most they may refuse then other options can be considered but first ask!

This may be hard for you but I would just tell them that you can't move til the 14th. If they are not reasonable there really isn't anything they can do to you in that time. But I'm sure they won't give you a hard time.

ASTORROSE
Call your rental agency and just explain to them what you told us. If your lease expires on the first, than just ask for a 1 month extension. As long as you've already completed your original contract/lease there shouldn't be any problems. Most companies will work with you on a month to month basis in cases like yours. Good Luck!

I have known leases to go month to month in certain circumstances. Go ahead and try it. You shouldn't have reservations on requesting this since your rental company has only a good experience of doing business with you.
