Question about renting an apartment.?
This is my first time renting an apartment. I found this cute apartment for $875 a month and the security deposit is $875. Do I pay the first months rent and the security deposit? Or just the security deposit? Im confused about this.

Only the security deposit until you move in the first day. You only pay the first months rent when you gain possession of the apartment by getting a key, pre-move in inspection and make sure no one else is living there. Yeah, you would be surprised what could happen. If you have to sue for your deposit back think about how hard that will be if the Landlord has all of your money.

I don't want you to be confused by other answerers and hand over all of your money. While many people go by personal experience, that is not usually the entire picture. Security deposit holds the apartment. Rent is due on the first of each month or whatever day you agree to. You pay rent ONLY when you move in. You DO NOT hand it over all at once unless you are getting the key that very day.

Typically you have to pay the security deposit plus the first months rent before you can move in.

You have to pay both upfront --- unless the complex is offering a 'special deal' of first month free.

The landlord will make you pay the first months rent and the security deposit. So yeah $1750 the first month. Thats gonna be a hefty bill.

Yes you will have to pay the $875 for first month's rent in addition to the deposit which is usually 1-1.5 times a months rent. So you will have to come up with $1750 for the cute little apartment.

first month rent and security deposit. plus you have to pay for a power hook up.

Typically it is both but that is a really high security deposit. How big is the apartment? For that price in rent i would hope that it is at least 900 sq feet. I am paying 824 for a 863 sq foot apartment and the deposit was only 200.

the security deposit is just that-security for one month's worth of rent in case you decide to jump ship. You'll still pay the $875 rent the first month, as well. The security deposit also covers any mishaps(holes in the walls, dirty carpets, etc.) If all is well when you decide to move on and not rent any more, your $875 security deposit should get returned to you.

Good info here.

I just wanted to add that you should be aware that even though it's the same amount as your monthly rent, the security deposit can't be used as your last month's rent when you move out.
