I live in freaking NYC - I don't like it. Rent is 1,250 for a two bedroom one bathroom.
The bathroom is stuck in the 70's and is gross. The floors are tiny white tiles and the wall tiles are pink and black (ew). The lights and the mirror are very outdated too - - - hard to describe ... but just very old.
The floor is dirty no matter how much clean it and so is the mirror. the bathroom is small and I know Im going to live here for a couple more years.
Would it be worth it to remodel it a little or no since Im renting? Any tips and advice please?
I just feel like its unfair that I pay so much and then remodel it for some scumbag....Im conflicted. |

That rent rate is well below average for a studio or efficiency (one room apt) in NYC. Of course it's a dump. You're very lucky to have such a modern bathroom as 1970s at that price. 1870's style is more like it in that price range. Keep cleaning.
You cannot make any changes to the apt without written approval from your landlord. And you would have to pay for it all. Bathroom remodel can easily run $25,000 or more. At that price, you can afford to pay rent closer to market rates, maybe even find something better.
Unless you get into the $3,000-4,000 and up price range (for 1 BR), NYC apts are crap. Even in that price range, a lot of them are crap. It's NYC. Landlords are broke with all the taxes, and cannot raise rents high enough to cover maintenance costs. |

You have a bargain since 2 bedrooms normally rent for 2500. You cannot remodel without written permission from the landlord. NYC law is if improvements are made the landlord can raise your rent. Read your lease. Put down a Scatter rug, Paint the walls white and hang a great shower curtain |

You do not have the right to make any changes without the permission of the owner. You saw the place before you signed a lease. You took it as is. There is no such thing as remodel a little. It costs thousands of dollars to upgrade a tiny bathroom. If you are getting a 2 bedroom for $1250 in NYC, it is going to be a dump! My suggestion: Move to Boise Idaho. For twelve fifty you can get a penthouse ... but of course, you will get the kind of people who you wouldn't want to live around and you can't redecorate them. When your lease is up, find a better place for a few dollars more ... well, a few thousand more. A decent two bedroom in NYC costs over $3000 now. And it will still have roaches. |
