Rent A Center a viable option?
I have sub par credit (still a work in progress) but really need new bedroom furniture. I know RAC doesn't exactly give you a great deal, but what is a guy to do if he doesn't have several grand on hand to make the purchases?

As you know, by the time you own the purchase, you will have paid at least twice its value in rental fees. However, there are some positives to rent-to-own. First, if you can afford to pay off the item in the first three months, the rental fees are greatly reduced and it ends up not being such a bad price. If you had put the set on credit and paid it off in three months, you would pay about the same in additional fees, so you are not really getting a bad deal. Another thing about Rac that can work for you, is that if you are unable to make your payments and have to return the merchandise, you may re-rent it at a later date and the money you have already put into the purchase will be credited to your account. Also, if you establish a good payment history, rac will be willing to work with you. In most cases, if you can give them a reasonable amount of time in which you can make your installment, they will allow you to keep it until you do. However, this only works after you are an established customer with a history of making installments on time. If you go to your local Rac, they can quote you prices on the full contract and that of the early payoff option. If you can swing it, the early payoff is a much better choice financially. However, if you are in desperate need of furniture and cannot find it elsewhere, then a rent-to-own company is probably the way to go.

Good Deeds
By the time all is said an d done with these places you will end up paying 2-3 times mores than the stuff is worth. If you miss a 3 payments hey will take the stuff back and your rating will really be bad. Try liquidation warehouses or garage sale, auction sales where you can get stuff cheap. Start small (bed first) and buy more pieces as the money comes in.

Why spend the extra money? Do you have a Good Will in your area? Any second hand thrift stores or discount stores?
I would rather do this than spend two or three times what the furniture is worth to a Rental Center. And the furniture is not exactly top notch to begin with. And be prepared to get phone calls every day if they even think that your payment will be late.

Places's like RAC and Aaron's are perfect in your credit is not so good. But be prepared to pay a fairly high interest rate for the bedroom set.

There are plenty of places to go where you can spend less than several grand on furniture. Look into furniture wherehouses, or wholesale distributers where you can get liquidated prices. Sale days on holidays like the Memorial Day we have coming up is also a good day to look for bargains, they usually have blow out sales to unload inventory. Everyone wnats top of the line stuff, but try living withn your means until you can actuall yafford things like that without strapping yourself.

well i did it. i pais twice as much for it but i got new furniture for 50 bucks a week for a year and it was nice, well before my dogs got too it. what other options are there really? i thought it was worth it, you can always pay off early if you get extra money as save on intrest:)

Ken
Financing furniture is financing furniture. If you put $2,000 on a credit card and paid the minimum monthly payments you would end up paying much more than RAC charges. If you really want it and don't think the payments are too high for your budget then go for it. You may be better off getting something that is inexpensive and trying to save the $50 per week that you would pay them though. The idea of thrift stores is a great one. You could get all the furniture there and then get a new mattress from Sam's Club or Costco for about $300. Use the money you save to rebuild your credit in other ways.

theyre actually real good. if you find the right one with the right people, youll be satisfied. i bought a few things and thats where i got my laptop. ive been goin thru RAC for about a year now and im very happy with them. when i got my first laptop, the cd drive broke and i went in there and explained to them what happend. the guy drove 45 mins away (after the store was closed) to go pick me up a brand new laptop. it was more expensive and they gave it to me for the same price. i had a used dell and they gave me a brand new toshiba satellite. it seems that if you spend more, they give you more respect. along with deals and discounts! youll be satisfied tho!

Holy Moly you are going to pay 10 times as much! Why not just save and hit the thrift store in the meantime? I hate it when people get ripped off like that.

It may be your only "right now" option, but think for a minute...How will you ever get ahead and have money if you are paying outrageous fees like this? Compare the true cost to the true cost of the same item at a regular store. I suggest getting a mattress and boxsprings and a $20 bedframe and getting creative.

What about Ikea? That's super-cheap and looks pretty good. You are going to end up paying $50-80/week at RAC. You can get a good mattress new for $500 or less. Target has cheap furniture that looks good. Then there are places like Value City furniture, you can buy the whole bedroom for $1000-2000.

So approximately 5 months of RAC payments will get you a new bedroom at Ikea or Value City paid in full. Then, you can save up more money, sell your first set and buy something nicer. It's hard enough to get ahead in life without places like RAC.
