Rent Skip?
How long does a company chase you for unpaid rent?
I skipped town about 10 years ago without paying for three months rent.I want to go back to this town..will I get caught and have to pay it back?

Stuart
After you steal from someone, it's unlikely they'll forget it.

Lisa M
They probably filed it with a collection company. Check your credit report, you can check your report once a year for free.
If it's on your credit report they is a max that it can stay on there. If Florida it's 5 years. Check your state laws.

Quite doubtful! Unless ur renting from the same people...look around find someone else to rent from....10 years is a long time! I would check your credit report, see if they held it against you..if they have then you no longer owe it....7 years is the legal limit on unpaid debts...that were reported. If u have made no attempt to make payment or payment arragements. They prolly just took your security deposit. ! GOOD LUCK! HAPPY RENTING!

You might get caught anyway when and if the debtor files a lawsuit against you. If they haven't been able to find you yet, just wait til you apply for a home loan, car loan or even a background check on a new job. Ta da! Your past will come back to haunt you.

bbsmokoloko
check your credit report..should be on your public record..after that amount of time they may have wrote you off as bad debt..

if they find out you live there they have a judgement against you then they could garnish your pay checks and force the courts to collect for them so id be cool about telling any old friends that im back till i have a job and am settled or talk to a lawyer for free the first intake is free then through him make an offer to pay half by mail dont tell them your new address ,, and pay payments settle it for half they get something and you get to make a small payment then have the credit reports corrected ,OK

Unless you did something fraudulent you wont go to jail, depending on local laws if they filed a judgment against you they can renew it every 7 years (may be different in some states), so it will stay on your credit report and they can garnish wages, etc if they filed a judgment against you, more than likely they wrote it off and you now have a nice bad mark on your credit report that will make it hard to rent or buy a home.

Best way to find out if it is on your record is to look on your credit report. If it is, it will show, the previous address you lived at and show weather or not you were ever "evicted" for not paying your rent, or had a "UD"--unlawful detainer filed on you. If it doesn't show either one of those things it may just show the address w/ just an amont owed on your credit report.
If it's not on there, you can basically go and rent anywhere you want, if it is, you will probably have to settle this amount before you can rent anywhere.
Anywhere, decent at least, or rent through a private owner, who's got a house or a duplex.

Katie
You will probably get fined a couple more hundred dollars.
Why did you not pay your rent money? Were you in trouble?
You could have loaned money from a bank or close family or friends. They will probably track you down as soon as you use a credit card. It shows up on records. Good luck. I really hope you don't get caught.

Do you really think you should be able to walk away from it without paying? Put the shoe on the other foot - how would YOU feel if someone skipped without paying you? You'd probably want to get it back no matter how long it took wouldn't you? If you want to go back to this town you should find the person and pay them first. If they don't pursue you for nonpayment they could tell everyone in town about it. Which is worse? If you approach them first and pay they will likely tell others about that instead.

MICHAEL L
yes because if the landlord was smart about it there is a warrant out for you as well for non payment unless the landlord no longer own,s said property and yes non payment and skipping out is a felony

They can chase you for as long as they wish, or until you declare bankruptcy.

MexicanPunk
