hard economic times
Rent increases?
My landlord increased my rent twice already, once every 6 months since I moved to my apartment. Now they want to increase the late charges from $50 to $100! a couple of months ago we got a letter saying that if kids were thowing trash in the pools all the tenants would have to pay a cleaning fee on top of all the rent increases. I think this is abuse! is it legal for them to do this? they wont give 1 yr leases just 6 months and everytime it renews they increase by $100.00!

yes, they can do it

well, you better move then - there might not be any laws on limits to rent increases in you state, so there's probably nothing you can do about that

by law the landlord can increase it every time the lease is renewed. But it can only be a percentage of what you are already paying.

go to your city hall in your town and see what the percentage is in your town. He cannot go over that. If he did you can sue him for all the money he overcharged you. He will have to give that back to you plus the late fees have to be returned to you. my landlord increases mine about 20.00 each year. he cannot go over that.

Your rent has nothing to do with the problems the kids are doing. if he had fines then he would have to take you to court for the fines only. increasing the rent for that is illegal

my town has free legal aid for landlord / tenant issues. See if your town has that. if not then just sue him yourself for about 30.00

So far, 100% of what they are trying to do,
or suggesting to do or are preparing to do
is 200% legal and legitimate and recommended.

I have nothing going with your landlord as
i have no idea where in the US you live.

However, being a teacher and
problem solver--i solicit your suggestions;

the landlord must TRY to appease every tenant every day, handle unruly kids when their parents won't, and earn a profit
for the owner--almost a Hurcleanian
act!

So, what would you do if you were the
landlord=or property owner?

There is no one best way to solve problems but when tenants are asked
to walk in the other persons' shoes,
things not thought about spring to life!

I DO feel for you. and I do suggest
you find a condo you can buy or
a cheap house and fix it up and
stop becoming a tenant--low end
apartments deal with a bunch of
cra_.......

Yup... perfectly legal, unless discriminatory treatment (say, if you're the only one getting rent increases, and you suspect it's because of your age or race, to try to chase you out, for example). You always have the option to move and live elsewhere, take your business away from the landlord.

Hi there,

It makes no sense to me at all what your Landlord is doing, it is not legal. I do not know which State you live in, but there are laws. You should find out the location of the Board of Rental Guidelines (I don't remember the exact name). I used to be a manager of High Rise and Commercial buildings in N.Y.S., and since retired many years.

But I do know that landlords, have to abide by the percentage of how much they may increase your rent, and have to give you options on the length of a lease.

Good luck to you. As far as I can see your Landlord is playing games with you, and it is illegal.

rhsaunders
It's legit. Which is why you should consider buying a place of your own. It is a duty of both landlords and tenants to keep abreast of the market so that they can agree on a proper rent.

*****NEWSFLASH*****// Your landlord is taking full ADVANTAGE of the current bleak economy. Moreover, your lease is subject to additional increases as the demand for leasing is on an uprise due to the volume of homeowners losing homes in foreclosure.

I have created a website to assist EVERYONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE with work at home employment that is LEGITIMATE and LEGAL. Paychecks are distributed weekly or bi-weekly, contingent one is articulate, maintains a quiet work environment, and free to choose designated hours. Also, one may begin a BRAND NEW CREDIT REPORT.......legally in this recession with a promotional booklet. If one wishes NOT to repair or renew credit, simply browse to work from home job listings to apply immediately. Most vacancies are in search of immediate hire.

Well, if they do it when the renew the lease...they can do whatever they want. Move out of there...it doesn't sound like a good place.
