Renter's insurance, is it worth it?
I keep on getting these ads from Geico on the renter's insurance packages that they offer. I am renting right now and has one roommate. I've gotten mixed opinions on the renter's insurance, some say it's not worth it some say it is. So what do you guys think? I don't think it's that much money, maybe like $20 a month or something like that?

My renters insurance is $140 a year (roughly $12 a month). The amount of security I feel just for having it, makes it worth it. Should anything happen (i.e. fire, theft) I'm covered! How much is putting your mind at ease worth? (To me @ least $12 a month)

This site has great links for getting quotes on Renter's Insurance! Good Luck!

Over the years I found it far cheaper to do without contents insurance.

After all, how often do you get burgled, flooded or have the place catch fire.

Even if you, then there is an excess on the payout and claiming might affect future premiums.

Only exception might be for something particularly valuable like jewellery.

$20 a month is $240 a year which is lot of loot.

It's a pretty good idea.

It's not just insurance on your own stuff that you get. You're covered for your liability.

For example, say you have a grease fire and burn the building to the ground. The owner's insurance will pay, BUT, they're going to probably come after you for negligence.

Or say someone gets injured in your home, and it's your fault. The insurance covers you for that.

It's worth it for most people, certainly more than those who actually get it.

Get a quote from Geico and other companies. Would all of your electronics, appliances and so forth be covered under the policy? What is NOT covered? (for instance somebody spills beer on your laptop) Are your belongings cheap enough to be replaced if they are stolen, or damaged in a flood or fire if you don't have insurance? This is something you need to form an educated opinion on, no guessing.

Having paid mucho dinero for homeowner's insurance over the years I'd say it's well worth the price, make sure that you look at REPLACEMENT insurance. We lost 85% of our home and belongings to a fire several years ago. Thanks to replacement insurance we had a roof over our heads, the furniture and everything was either replaced or we were given a check for a percentage of the current value of the item if we did not replace it, and things worked out OK. BE SURE that you read the polcy's fine print as to what is covered and under what circumstances. That beer on the laptop instance may be a non-covered item :)!

Depends on the neighbourhood you live in. If there is high crime, get the insurance. If you live in a basement apartment, get the insurance to protect you against flooding. The landlord will have building insurance, so if there was a fire or a flood, his building is protected but not the contents of the building, meaning all the tenants furniture. If you have very expensive furniture, like plasma TV, then the insurance is recommended, but if you have used throw away furniture, I recommend you keep your $20/month and invest in new furniture. In all my years of renting, I was only broken into once, and all they got was a sander and my jewellery, they could not carry anything heavy, was not worth the insurance. Anyhow, every time you make an insurance claim, you insurance rate goes up, so most people don't make a claim for this reason along. As you just proved advertising works, just turn off the TV and you won't be pressured into buying.

What is the worth of your private property??? $500-$1000 and you have to remember to file a claim they need to know what was lost-- then it is depreciated. If you schedule certain real valuable item--the cost is more. Most don't have enough to insure...NO is my opinion...

I have a policy. I would check around for the best price. I pay less than $100 a year.

It is worth it when you have a claim and did not have the insurance to cover the claim.

In apartment situations especially, it seems like there is a higher risk of damage or loss to your property. I would get it to cover yourself.

Great post! I completely understand your question. Money is hard for a lot of people right now since the enconomy is going down. My friend told me about this website of an organization that gives people up to $1500 towards their rent or mortgage. It's available in most areas, so I think you should check it out.

I was once in your situation. Don't worry, everything will work out for you =)

A year ago I found this organization that gives people up to $1500 in renter or mortagage assistance! They operate in most US cities, I highly suggest you try to get some of this money.

In general it probably is not worth it, however, if something happens and you are not covered, then you are out of luck. I would evaluate your situation and location, if you seem to be at more risk where you are, and have valuables, then get it. Or maybe test drive it for a while to see if you like it.

I think my insurance was $200/year. Renter’s insurance is one of those things that you’ll probably never need, but if you do, it more than pays for itself.

I have a buddy who just lost everything in an apartment fire. He had no insurance so he’s sleeping on other people’s couches while he finds a new place to live, and has to pay for all of his replacement stuff out of pocket. $200/year would be worth it to me to avoid the possibility of dealing with that!
